Crane number have risen exponentially in the last few days. On monday I announced seeing some cranes arriving in the San Luis Valley. Today, I saw about 3,000 to 4,000 birds at the Monte Vista NWR. You can easily see them wherever grain was left standing. This is important for we still have 6 inches of hard crusty snow that has locked in the grain on the soil. Best place right now is the 2E and 7S...this is a gravel road on the south side of the Refuge. Cackling geese and Pintails also seemed to have turned up overnight.
