[cobirds] Broomfield Great-tailed Grackle Roost

Dear Cobirds,

While driving past Tom Frost Reservoir (NW corner of Lowell and Midway, Broomfield) I was astonished to see the cottonwoods dripping with Great-tailed Grackles.  I spent about 10 minutes watching this roost and estimated (by tens) approximately 600 Great-tailed Grackles in the cottonwoods lining Midway, in the neighborhood to the south, and in the cattails around the reservoir.  There were also lots of starlings and Red-winged Blackbirds mixed in with the grackles, so I made an effort to estimate only the very long-tailed ones.  A very large number of these grackles were male.  This is by far the largest Great-tailed Grackle assemblage I recall seeing in northern Colorado.

Also in the area were two Greater White-fronted Geese and a hybrid white-fronted x Canada Goose on the pond behind the Broomfield Community Center.

good birding,
