RE: [cobirds] Two Buttes Res (Baca) on 25Jan2018

Hi guys,

Kansas has an impressive list of shorebirds that have likely over-wintered, but Long-billed Curlew isn't one of them. As far as I know there is only ONE record of Long-billed Curlew for the state of Kansas in November and NONE for December, January or February.

A single LBCU was in SE Morton County (about 60 miles ESE of Two Buttes) on 11 November 1989 reported by McHugh, Pittman and Sebastian Patti. This record is cited in both Birds of Cimarron Nat'l Grassland and Bird of Kansas.

Curlews certainly winter out in California at the same latitude as Two Buttes, but this still seems like an extraordinary sighting. I suppose that bill comes in handy when walking on ice!
