I never was able to find the "bird" up in the tree despite multiple attempts. I heard the call off and on through the night, it became less frequent as the night wore on. Unable to sleep, I still heard it at four this morning.
I went out to look up in the tree to see if I could see anything during the daylight hours. On the rocks at the base of the tree I found a nearly dead young squirrel. I picked it up, warmed it a little bit and brought it to a local emergency vet who is kind enough to help in the situations.

While waiting, I googled sounds that baby squirrels make and found the call of a baby squirrel in distress. Perfect match!
I know that there are a lot of people that don't like squirrels, for understandable reasons, but I would prefer not to hear from them in response to this email. Thanks.
