Yesterday 8/25 I drove to Lamar (Prowers Co), to strike out on Swallow-tailed Kite. Saw more Mississippi Kites than I've seen before, good study of young birds and adults. I bushwhacked the community college woods which was great fun, with two Carolina Wrens, two Great-crested Flycatchers, male & female Northern Cardinal, Red-headed Woodpecker, Common Nighthawks etc.
I backtracked to Hasty Campground (Bent Co) to look for Black & White Warbler found by Brandon Percival, didn't re-find it but on the way in I saw Scaled Quail, an Osprey beneath the spillway, and on the way out two Greater Roadrunners were on the caprock of the small cliff area north of the road. First time I've seen two roadrunners together!
West of Fowler I decided to take Nepesta Road north then east through Otero Co, north on County Lane 1, then wandered forever through Crowley Co, a corner of Pueblo Co, a few feet of Lincoln Co, and into El Paso Co. I wasn't quite sure where I was for almost three hours, saw one car and over 400 Lark Buntings on that drive which to me was a migration thing. Hard to tell males from females in the wave after wave of small scattering flocks, with their un-tidy non-breeding plumage. Also out there were many Lark Sparrows, only one Vesper sparrow, a few Clay-colored Sparrows and Brewers Sparrows, one Say's Phoebe, Western Wood-Pewees, diminishing numbers of Western Meadowlarks, an Olive-sided Flycatcher, and two Blue Grosbeaks.
