Have had a flock of 55-65 piñon jays visiting my feeders in Penrose off and on for years. Today that flock consists of 10 individuals.
Western State Colorado University professor, Pat Magee, did a study on the effects of "thinning" piñon-juniper woodlands for fire mitigation along the Arkansas River
near Royal Gorge/Salida area. His study showed a 4.26% decrease in the Piñon Jay population. Other P/J obligates also decreased in number-
Plumbeous Vireo -2.67%; Black-throated Gray Warbler -1.45%; Juniper Titmouse -0.44%. These species are Tier 1 species in the CO Wildlife Action Plan.
