[cobirds] Playas - Morgan Co

Birders,
I spent the afternoon running around Morgan County checking out the playas that Bill talked about.  My biggest surprise was 4 species of grebe.  The Western was in a shallow fluddle on the north side of MCR II between MCR 23 and 26.  The basic plumage Horned. alternate plumage Eared (2) and some of the Pied-billed were on the west side of Hwy 71 at MCR JJ. There were also Pied-billed on MCR 23 at MCR HH.  The Sora was calling from the weeds on the south side of the water on MCR 23.
Here is a list of the highlights:

Pied-billed Grebe
Horned Grebe
Eared Grebe
Western Grebe
WF Ibis
Pintail
BW & Cin Teal
Peregrine Falcon (juv.) Both MCR 23 & 26.  I think it was the same bird.
Sora
Avocet
Semipalmated Plover
Killdeer
LB Dowitcher
Stilt Sandpiper
Gr Yellowlegs
L Yellowlegs
Western Sand
Semi Sand
Wilson's Phalarope
RN Phalarope
Bank Swallow
Sage Thrasher
Cassin's Sp (1)
Chipping Sp
Vesper Sp
Savannah Sp (fresh plumage)
Grasshopper SP
McCown's Longspur (1)
Blue Grosbeak (1)
Eastern Meadowlark (1) (had only 2 brown tail feathers.  Rest were white)

[cobirds] Least Tern --- El Paso county, Big Johnson reservoir

COBirders,

We had a storm pass through this afternoon and into the early evening.  I had to go out to do some other stuff so decided to see if the storm had put anything down at Big Johnson Reservoir.  I was thinking maybe a Sabine's Gull at best.  The first time I stopped by it was raining and windy and I could not find much more than a single FORSTER'S TERN.  So I continued on with some other things and when the weather finally calmed and I was coming back by I looked one more time.  This time, right about 6:00 PM the Forster's Tern was still there but now I could also see a LEAST TERN way down at the west end near the inlet.  It was busy feeding most of the time except at one point it seem to disappear for a bit but then showed back up.  I suspect it just landed somewhere that I could not see it.  Bob Goycoolea just happened to stop by right at the right time and he was able to see the bird.  Unfortunately, a few others showed up a little later and we basically looked until sometime after 7:00 PM and could not refind the bird.  I have a bad feeling the bird has left but maybe it had just sat down somewhere or was even feeding and we just were missing it.

[cobirds] Black Swifts over Ken Caryl Valley JeffCo 8/31

Early this morning 2 Black Swifts appeared flying south under lowering gray skies with light rain beginning as I was birding in Ken Caryl Valley north of Massey Draw between the Lyons and Dakota formation hogbacks. They paused in their trajectory a bit to join some foraging White-throated Swifts and high flying swallows and then continued on south. Other migrants were not numerous in that area this morning, but there was a Cassin's Kingbird, and small numbers of Wilson's, Virginia's and Yellow warblers. I had expected lots of Spizella sparrows in that area, but all I found was a single Brewer's and no Chipping!

Chatfield at the Platte delta area had two continuing Semipalmated Plovers and some of the other expected shorebirds that have been there lately. A juvenile Stilt Sandpiper flew by the shoreline and landed along the main lake shore about 300 meters west of the Platte inlet. A Willow Flycatcher was in that area. Pulses of Violet-Green Swallows were moving through, with smaller numbers of Barn, Tree and Bank

The Marina sandspit area had no shorebirds except Killdeer when I looked, but there were a good number of usual sparrows and Yellow Warblers.

Last evening 3 Marbled Godwits flew over Ken Caryl Avenue near C470, heading in the Chatfield direction.

[cobirds] Eastern (Lilian's) Meadowlark - Boulder County

I found all three birds today on the north side of the trail at McIntosh Reservoir, Boulder Co., this afternoon. I'm starting to wonder if these are residents, so it'll be interesting to see if they stick around or not.
If anyone still wants to see these birds, please let me know. Here is my email: blackguillemot13@gmail (dot) com

[cobirds] Chestnut-sided Warbler, CSR, El Paso Co., Mon.

Hi COBirders,

Migrations has ground almost to a halt in the willows at Clear Spring Ranch. Very few migrants seen, very few birds banded. I've been watching for birds crossing the moon this week - and haven't seen any there either!

BUT, among the three birds banded today was an adult, non-breeding male, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. Very bright white, lots of chestnut on the flanks, but lacking the facial patterns we usually think of. Lots of wing molt, so must have just recently lost color. Photos available upon request.

Hoping for a weather change!

[cobirds] CFO NE Colorado Field Trip Day 2

First, let me apologize for the late post of day 1 (Saturday) of this trip.  I must have closed my computer before the send/receive was over and it didn’t get posted until I was home this evening.

On Day 2 we started with a Mississippi Kite at dawn in Holyoke.  The Lion’s Fishin’ Hole in town was productive, but without anything more noteworthy than Orange-crowned Warbler, Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak.  We continued north from Holyoke to Julesburg where things were quite disappointing, in part because of winds that were now roaring out of the south—at least that cleared the smoke!  Also disappointing was the fact that the hummingbird attracting plantings at the Julesburg Elementary School have died off, minimizing chances for those species in town.  The Pony Express Road between Julesburg and Ovid, Ovid and a return to Jumbo Reservoir were all hot, windy and note particularly birdy.

By the time we got to North Sterling Reservoir and State Park the winds had eased back, but the temp had hit 100.  One of my favorite (of many) spots in that park is the grove of trees deep off the SWE corner of the lake south of the campground.  We were on the footbridge over the inlet canal heading toward that spot when Sue Riffe called out, “Cooper’s Hawk”.  Well we didn’t get on a Cooper’s but the call on Sue’s part was noteworthy because pending review of the photos that Chuck Hundertmark took,  the bird she saw has been identified as a Red-shoulder Hawk.

The bird was an immature with a strongly barred, long tail and distinctive, tawny panels or crescents in the primary tips of the wings.  John Vanderpoel has discussed our observations with Brian Wheeler and we are pretty confident of the call.  This is, I think, the first Red-shouldered reported in the state in 5 years, since a winter bird near Windsor.

The bird flew from the inlet canal toward the SE tree grove, so we continued in that direction since it was our initial objective.  We did not re-locate the hawk there, but did find a couple warbling vireos and a Dusky/Hammonds Flycatcher.  Also a single Barn Owl in the grove which makes 8 times in 9 years that I have led this trip that there have been Barn Owls in this grove.  Well, now I’ve let all my secrets out, but since I’m about the only person to ever go to NSSP, I guess that is okay. We ended up the day by visiting the string of NE Morgan County playas.  The sun was bad by the late-afternoon timing of our visit, but the shorebirds are still plentiful an varied.  New for me at the Rd 26 X JJ and II playa were a few Red-necked Phalaropes among about 150 Wilson’s.

All told we had 116 species for the two day field trip.

[cobirds] CFO Fieldtrip to NE Colorado (Logan, Sedgwick and Phillips Counties) Day One

John Vanderpoel and I are leading a group of 10 birders on an overnight trip to NE Colorado.  Today we headed out to begin our day on Logan County Road 93 south of I-76—the Red Lion exit.  We had lots of sparrows along the road including Cassin’s, Grasshopper, Clay-colored, Brewer’s, Chipping, Lark, Vesper and Lark Bunting.  Three Orchard Orioles were in the field at the ranch house and south of this spot we managed to find one Greater Prairie Chicken.

Next we visited Tamarack Pond in the eponymous SWA.  We started there with a male Baltimore Oriole (and later saw a hybrid) plus several calling Northern Bobwhites.  A small pocket of migrants included an Ovenbird, Red-eyed Vireo and Philadelphia Vireo along with Red-bellied Woodpecker.  In the west units all we could manage was a singing Bell’s Vireo.

At Red Lion SWA there were about a dozen shorebirds including Bllack-necked Stilt and Stilt Sandpipers.  Jumbo Reservoir in Logan County had more shorebirds including two Sanderlings, but the best bird was a Sabine’s Gull adult.  We had a handful of California Gulls and that long-resident, funky Lesser Black-backed Gull in the Sedgwick side.  Also seen in Sedgwick was a Peregrine Falcon.

Continuing south to Haxtun the water treatment ponds were active with one pond on the east side of the road being low and very shorebirdy including a Pectoral.  There was also an incredibly dark  Merlin present—our 4th falcon of the day.  Finally we ended up exhausted in Holyoke with 101 species for the day.

We continue to Julesburg and North Sterling SP.

[cobirds] BARR Banding Station Opens

After a few days of training and orientation for staff and volunteers, the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (note NEW name!) officially opened its fall banding season at Barr today.  It was hot weatherwise and relatively quiet birdwise. Only the front 12 nets (those closest to the road) are up and open; the areas where our other ~15 nets are located are still too wet. Not sure when the balance of the area will be dry enough to use.

We banded 17 birds today, all before 10:30, when it just got too hot to be banding:

House Wren 7
Yellow Warbler 2
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 5
Green-tailed Towhee 1 (FOS)

The 4 days last week that we were open some hours were similar to today in terms of the mix of species.  Heavy on Wilson's, Yellows and House Wrens.  We've also caught at least one of each of these: Black-capped Chickadee, Chipping, Lincoln's, Song and Lark Sparrow, American Goldfinch, Northern Waterthrush, Orange-crowned Warbler, Western Wood-Pewee, Hammond's Flycatcher, and one extremely frustrating Empidonax Flycatcher that we could not ID (for anyone interested, there actually is a 4-letter code - UNEM).

We will be open 6 days a week, weather permitting, through at least October 11.  The closed day will be a weekday and will vary depending on when we do not have a school group - this coming week we are closed Monday (tomorrow) and the same will be true next week (Labor Day). We are opening nets at 6:30, and will run until noon or when it gets too hot. (Given the weather report, it is unlikely we will make it to noon any day this coming week!)

Look forward to see you sometime this fall!

[cobirds] Chase Trip results -- Denver, Washington, Morgan Counties

Hi all --

Ten DFO birders joined me today for an entertaining chase trip to places that seemed ripe for rarities. Decent birds in great habitat. Our stops:

1. Bluff Lake Nature Center (Denver County) -- my home turf has a black-necked stilt, rare in Denver County, that has been showing the last few days. We were also treated to sora and snipe in the same scope view, five solitary sandpipers, and young Swainson's Hawks perched within 20 yards. Conditions are the best I've seen at Bluff Lake for shorebirds. (If you're thinking of looking for shorebirds at Marston Reservoir, don't bother. It's chock full of water.)

2. Last Chance (Washington County) -- John B. thought he saw a yellow-throated warbler, but it vanished before ID could be confirmed. Otherwise ho-hum with willow flycatcher, black-headed grosbeak, wilson's warblers, and western wood-pewee evidence of migration. Red-breasted Nuthatch was interesting.

3. CO 71 just south of the intersection with Morgan CR G -- three greater prairie-chickens.

4. Brush Prairie Ponds SWA (Morgan Co.) -- lots of water, not much shorebird habitat, plenty of sparrows and blue grosbeak for study. One yellow-headed blackbird, a shrike, and two eared grebes made things interesting.

5. Playa at MCR 23 and HH -- awesome setting, the road goes straight through this extensive playa. Peeps very nearby on HH. Ten shorebird species including very cooperative pectoral sandpipers and a long-billed curlew.

6. Playa on MCR 26 between II and JJ -- another great playa. Ten shorebird species again, including another LB curlew, stilt sandpipers, impressive numbers of phalaropes. Prairie falcon and dickcissels.

7. Playa at MCR JJ and CO 71 -- tough light at our final stop. More large birds with many cormorants, some gulls, some shorebirds, etc.

All in all a great day. Hope this helps in planning trips as migration ramps up.

[cobirds] Pawnee (Weld) and CR 5 (Larimer) 8/29

Hi Everyone,

I walked around Crow Valley Campground and the creek north of it this morning 8/29. A few migrants were evident: flocks of Wilson’s Warblers, a Townsend’s Warbler, a Western Wood-Pewee. I heard 5 Soras and saw one. I got a glimpse of a Marsh Wren. I flushed a Wilson’s Snipe. There were 5 American Coots. A Blue-winged Teal was in a pool of the creek at the SW corner. WCR 100/75/102 had two Grasshopper Sparrows, a Clay-colored Sparrow, a Brewer’s Sparrow, lots of Vesper Sparrows, a Lark Sparrow, lots of young Lark Buntings, two Chestnut-collared Longspurs heard. I checked the city park in Grover, but it was pretty quiet except for Killdeer. I spent the afternoon on Larimer CR 5, driving and walking the first 3 miles. Two Sage Thrashers were still around, along with two Brewer’s Sparrows, lots of Vesper Sparrows, a Lark Sparrow, and lots of Lark Buntings. No Grasshoppers and no Baird’s.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 8/29 (Bell's Vireo)

Hi all,

David Chartier and I walked around Rock Canyon, and saw a Bell's Vireo and Rose-breasted Grosbeak along the Arkansas River, in the west part of the Osprey Picnic Area.  We also saw a male Red-naped Sapsucker and other birds by the Cottonwood Picnic Area parking lot.  Yesterday, I saw a female/immature American Redstart east of Snakeskin Picnic Area.  All these locations are below Pueblo Reservoir dam, Pueblo County.

For those of you interested in birds at Stadiums, I saw a Cooper's Hawk at Cyclone Stadium in Pueblo West, yesterday evening.  I normally only see Eurasian Collared-Doves and Killdeer, which also saw yesterday evening.

[cobirds] Chatfield SP - Jeffco/Dougco - SB Dowitcher

Birders,
Went to Chatfield to look for the SB Dowitcher.  I did not see it but I am confident that I heard it about 11 am.  I was out on the spit and heard a clear tu-tu-tu towards the east.  The call matched the call on the Sibley App.  Scanned a lot but never saw it.  Other shorebirds:
Semi Plover
Semi Sandpiper
Least Sandpiper
Spotted Sandpiper
Killdeer
Dougco:
Only gulls on the sand spit.  1 Cal Gull.  Apparently when the water was high beavers made it to the sand spit and chewed off at least 2 trees and gnawed on several more.

[cobirds] Full Moon and Migration

Hi COBirders,

We finally have some clear sky to go with the full moon before it gets too high in the sky tonight, and there are currently birds crossing the moon, at least from where I am sitting.

If you haven't tried it, watching the lunar disk with a tripod and spotting scope gives you a motionless platform for counting moon-crossing birds. This is about the prime time, at the end of August, and I'm not sure if it will be clear enough the next couple of nights. I've been waiting all month for this chance!

Good Viewing,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Phalaropes and Stilts at Duck Lake (LARIMER)

This morning there were phalaropes and black-necked stilts on Duck Lake, on Carpenter Rd (Hwy 392) near Fossil Creek Reservoir. Most of the phalaropes were definitely Wilson's but at least 2 Red-necked were also present. Since I found none of these species at Fossil Creek Reservoir, maybe these are the same birds other birders saw at Fossil Creek a couple of weeks ago?

Fossil Creek Res had high numbers of grebes, egrets, gulls, and ducks, but I didn't find any unexpected species. The number of Franklin's Gulls was impressive, as previously reported by other birders.

Thank you all for sharing sightings and happy birding!

[cobirds] Platte River Delta--JEFFCO

This morning, I went back to the Platte River Delta  to see if we could re-locate the Short-billed Dowitcher from the other day.  Just like the other day, the dowitcher was not seen for over an hour and then appeared out of nowhere!  I was also rewarded with a Gray Flycatcher that gave us(Loch Kilpatrick) good looks.  Other birds of interest were Semipalamated Plover, Western Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Semipalamated Sandpiper, and Solitary Sandpipers .  Photos of the Short-billed, Gray Flycatcher, and Semipalamated Plover can be seen below:

[cobirds] Warbler movement in El Paso County

I stopped by Sinton Pond briefly at 1:00 PM. I only had half an hour, and it was raining lightly most of the time, but I did observe some large groups of warblers. Since my time was limited, I only identified a few Wilson's, an Orange-crowned and a MacGillivray's. There's a good chance there's some more interesting birds.

[cobirds] Cassin's Vireo - Rocky Mtn Arsenal - Adams

27 August 2015
Intermittent light rain, warm

I am taking the day off from birding, so I only did a quick walk at the Arsenal this morning.  Birds of note:

Prairie Trail - Lark Bunting, Lazuli Bunting, large flocks of Clay-colored Sparrows, several other sparrow species.
Havana Ponds - Lesser Yellowlegs, many Killdeer, American Avocet, Rock Wren
Rod & Gun Club Trail - Here was where I had the Cassin's Vireo.  I found it when a Brown Thrasher flew into a bushy tree area and I followed it but was distracted by the motion of the vireo.  I had originally stopped at that particular spot because of the sounds of all the Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Eastern Kingbirds.  There were also Western Kingbirds, Wilson's Warblers, Western Wood-pewees, Blue Jays, a variety of woodpeckers, a Bullock's Oriole, and a Warbling Vireo.
Elsewhere on the way out I had a Loggerhead Shrike and an unidentified accipiter.  It was a nice selection.  Someday, I will learn how to properly take a day off.

[cobirds] Cassin's Vireo - Pueblo Co. 8/27

I saw my first Cassin's Vireo of the fall this morning, it was at Cottonwood Picnic Area parking lot, with a few other birds (Yellow, Wilson's, and Orange-crowned Warblers).  The parking lot is on the south side of the Arkansas River, below Pueblo Reservoir dam (Pueblo County).  It is the parking lot closet to the river, the other parking lot nearby, is the Snakeskin Picnic Area.

Up in the Wet Mountains, Custer County at 9,050 feet, I saw a female Black-chinned Hummingbird on 8/26 and a Dusky Grouse on 8/25.

Good birding,

Brandon Percival
