Hi COBirders,
With the cold and snow this morning I am feeding about 175 birds in my yard! The influx of Cassin's Finches continues. I have about 35 in the yard, and don't see any bands on these (I have banded about 25 here this month, after seeing none here in 2012 or 2013!) I still have an adult White-throated Sparrow hanging around, for about 10 days now.
Also of note for numbers, not unusual - 40 mixed juncos, including a nice male Cassiar, 45 House Finches, 10 Pine Siskins, 4 flickers, 2 Downy WP, 25 Bushtits, and a bunch of scrub jays, blue jays, magpies, WB Nuthatch, chickadees, White-crowned Sparrow, and a Spotted Towhee I banded 2 1/2 years ago.
Also, several of the juncos have been recaptured that were banded in previous winters. Wonder where they spent the summer? While the most common juncos have been Gray-headed so dar, that proportion is starting to shift recently to more Pink-sided. I have seen only one White-winged in the yard this season.
Wow, just had an adult male Cooper's Hawk flash through, and the yard went empty, but all of the hungry birds were back in about two minutes! That kind of day!
