[cobirds] The 300 Club

Every year I like to keep track of the number of birders with eBird state year lists at 300 or above across the country.  While there are a few days left in the year, and of course folks can update their lists at any time ater year’s end, Colorado again shows up as one of the premier states for birders this year.

Of course, California and Texas are way ahead of every other state.  In fact it is impossible to tell how many birders have recorded 300 species in those states by checking the top 100 list on ebird because more than 100 have made it in both.  The 100th top list in CA is at 315 and 307 in Texas!

Even though it is not a close 3rd, we here in Colorado take the third spot with 25 birders hitting the 300 year bird level, followed closely by Arizona with 23.  Washington and Oregon are next with 18 and 16 respectively, and then the list heads east and drops down to 14 for Florida and New Jersey.  Louisiana (11) is the only other state with more than 10 birders cracking 300 on their state year list and 22 states have nobody at all hitting 300. Our current total of 25 is up from 21 in 2013.

So I’m proud of us here in our land-locked, high and dry state.  (I should note that I’m also proud that we have perfect 50-50 gender balance in our top ten!)  Make it your goal next year to do the same—go out and find 300 species for the year in Colorado.
