This morning while walking around Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park...Paul spotted a Northern Pygmy-Owl right next to the walking path...practically at eye level. Of course neither of us had our cameras. We watched for quite awhile at very close range...less than 15 ft. from us and not at all bothered by our presence or that of our dog. We eventually continued on our way...kicking ourselves for not having the cameras with us. When we returned to the same spot more than 40 minutes later the owl was still there! We watched it for awhile and even had the opportunity to show it to a couple of walkers...who had no idea such a tiny owl even existed. We then looked at each other and said "What do we have to lose"...piled in the car, returned to La Veta, grabbed our camera equipment and sped back to the lake. The Northern Pygmy-Owl was still there! It had only moved to the next tree over...still low and close to the trail! We did get our best photos ever of this diminutive predator! It stayed for another 15 minutes or so and finally flew off.
The interesting thing is...this experience is almost identical to the only other time we have been fortunate enough to see Northern Pygmy-Owl in Huerfano County. Great looks, no cameras, raced home, returned, took photos and watched for another 20 minutes!
