Hi, all.
(It's currently minus-6 in Lafayette. This is good, this is very good.)
If anybody is on the fence about participating in Gullapalooza, 2/2/2013, here's a short video that should seal the deal for you:
This video was created by Amar Ayyash, one of the twelve (12) leaders we have recruited for Gullapalooza. The complete leader board: Amar Ayyash, Ted Floyd, Jeff Gordon, Bill Kaempfer, Nick Komar, Kathy Mihm-Dunning, Christian Nunes, Nathan Pieplow, Steve Mlodinow, Bill Schmoker, Joel Such, Marcel Such.

By the way, Andrew and I were out at Valmont Sunday afternoon, 1/13. The gulls were far away (straight west, near the Valmont/Leggett/Hillcrest "triplepoint"), so we spent most of our time looking at eagles and examining prairie dog skeletons. Even so, we couldn't help but notice one of the Lesserbacks--although at a distance, strikingly black. Will have to get Amar on this bird; maybe it's not a pure graellsii. Let's find out together on 2/2. (By the way, what's up with people shooting geese out there??)
Something else. A decent chunk of the Valmont roost seems to be making its way over to Waneka Lake, e. Boulder County, although the timing is variable. Need to get out there with a scope. If you wander out onto the ice, be careful. Or not; your carcass would be much appreciated by the gulls. At Waneka late yesterday afternoon (i.e., after the gulls had departed for Valmont), Monday, 1/14, Hannah and Andrew and I saw a beautiful columbarius Merlin (not our usual wintering subspecies) and a Northern Shrike. Cold-weather birding is the absolute best.
