Hi all
Al Levantin , Tom McConnell and I visited the high country yesterday, Thursday. With the temperature inversions, the lower elevations were by far the coldest. Our overnight low of 1F (-18C) at home, was the high temperature of the afternoon at Kremmling.
Our birding day started in Kremmling, at 9am -18F, where yard feeders on the 900 block of Eagle provided the bulk of the action. The feeders on Gore were empty and the folks were not home there (we had brought presents of Nijer and Sunflower)
At least 100 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen, with at least one candidate for a HOARY photographed. 60+ ROSY-FINCHES of all three species, and 10+American Tree Sparrows were the other highlights. After driving around the area for some time we finally left early afternoon when the temperature had reached 1F. Just south of town we saw three Golden Eagles, and a Rough-legged Hawk. The only other raptors of the day were several Bald Eagles and a couple of Red-tailed Hawks.
We headed home via Silverthorne where the mostly frozen Blue River had a pair of BARROW’S GOLDENEYES on it a few miles north of town, as well as a lone Canada Goose and a Common Merganser. At the water treatment plant, at least 30 more BARROW’S as well as Ring-necked Ducks, Gadwall, Mallard, Green-winged Teal and an American Coot.
Closer to home, at 5.15pm, the pond at Coryell Ranch Carbondale, hosted a spectacular 145 BARROW’S GOLDENEYES. Quite the sight!
Good birding all
