[cobirds] Swamp Sparrow, Larimer County

The Swamp Sparrow found by Dave Leatherman and refound by Joe Massomer at Cottonwood Hollow in east Fort Collins was present this morning.  I followed the directions posted yesterday by Joe, seeing and hearing the bird at about 9:30.

I went over to Cottonwood Hollow along east Prospect Road in Fort Collins over my lunch hour today. On the way into the natural area, I bumped into Larry Griffin who was on his way out. Sorry Larry, it appears you were about 20 minutes too early. I found one of the Swamp Sparrows along the flowing ditch/canal that is east of Artists Point Pond (or what's left of it). It was approximately 60-70 yards south of the culvert flowing from Artists Point Pond to the ditch/canal. At first things were very silent, but after
about 15-20 minutes of standing still along the ditch and not making any noise except for an occasional spish every 3-4 minutes, I heard a different chip note to my
left. When I went to investigate, the Swamp Sparrow was chipping frequently and at one point flew up to the top of a cattail stalk for several seconds before diving back
into the cattails and going silent. I also had a silent bird about 100 yards south of the culvert that dove into brush on the east side of the ditch and would not come
back out and would not call, so I don't know what that was except it did not act or respond as a Song Sparrow would.

[cobirds] Continuing Fox Sparrow, Walden Ponds, Boulder

After an hour and a half of patiently stalking movement in the junipers described by previous posters, I observed the red Fox Sparrow fly out across the path. It gave a few "smack" calls from the grasses where I was finally able to get a clear view. 4:40 PM, Nov. 30Th.

[cobirds] At home today- Dickcissal female

Hi Cobirders. While watching the news at 12:15PM I saw a bird fly
into the front yard and then up into the young Locust tree in front
of the window. What is that?
It was about 6" Pale colored . with gray face and gray about the
head. Top of head was much darker. Bill was gray also. The throat
was tinged with yellow.
breast pale too, possible thin streaking was worn off or not
noticeable because of plastic covering the window. I got a couple
minutes look as it moved just to the left.

I had my larger Sibley at my right elbow so looked for it right after
it flew across the street into an evergreen and disappeared.

I settled on Dickcissal fall female which fit very well. I had seen
one fall male several years ago along the Arkansas valley. Sure was
different from breeding
plumage. They are know to move west many to California.

And more I saw on the thistle feeder a very purple finch with a very
white lower belly. The scope was here but not set up so that look
awhile as well as
getting the camera and getting that on the digiscope platform.
Finally I got it together and everything in focus and there were 5
Goldfinches. I sure hope
that purple guy comes back. Now there is a Common Grackle there.
It has learned to contort itself around back reach down and get few
seeds.
It went and replace by 2 birds.
Have to get to the store.

Bye

[cobirds] Jackson County 11/29

Birders,

I drove down to Walden yesterday to check the water bodies there for Barrow's Goldeneyes (BAGO) for RMBO's annual count. Walden Res had a nice surprise: 2 Trumpeter Swans to go with a pair of BAGOs and a few other ducks. Walden is about half frozen and very low.

Arapaho NWR is basically dried up, and all I saw there were a few ravens and no grouse. Seldom visited MacFarlane Res further south had open water, but only white-cheeked geese.

FYI, I have been seeing good numbers of Snow Buntings in flocks of 4 and 5 here in Carbon County, Wyo along with lots of C. Redpolls. Since Redpolls seem to be everywhere in CO, I wouldn't be surprised if decent numbers of Snow Buntings begin showing up there soon. Keep your eyes open!

Cheers,

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 11/30

I got to Pueblo City Park around 8am to the Headquarters area and it was quiet, so walked along the Arkansas River on the North side, west toward the Pueblo Nature Center.  I turned around after checking the large pond east of the Pueblo Nature Center.  My only highlight along here, were 15 Eastern Bluebirds, probably the flock I haven't seen in Rock Canyon for a while.

When I got back to Pueblo City Park around 915am, I quickly saw the Yellow-throated Warbler in the sycamore tree, just east of the Headquarters.  I also saw the adult male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a Pygmy Nuthatch

I decided to check out inside the Pueblo Zoo, and the Yellow-rumped Warblers were in there, no Pine or Yellow-throated, though there was a Common Yellowthroat, hanging out on the ground.  I also saw a female Williamson's Sapsucker and a Red Crossbill.

I only checked one spot at Pueblo Reservoir on the way home, and I saw a Pacific Loon and a Common Loon, they were off West Fisherman's Point.

Just a reminder, there is a race in Pueblo tomorrow, people will be running a Half Marathon, from Pueblo City Park, below City Park, west all the way through the Pueblo Nature Center and Rock Canyon.  So, birding might be difficult on the trails tomorrow, with all the runners.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings--Lakewood-Green Mtn/Jeffco

This morning at 8:30am, I was returning from dropping my daughter off at school. As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed two Waxwings at the top of my neighbors tree. When I got out of the car, I heard the trilled call of Bohemian Waxwings. I sprinted inside and grabbed the binoculars. When I got on the birds, I immediately noticed the reddish undertail coverts and lighter colored birds. While watching the birds, they flew east. I ran to the very birdy backyard hoping they had stopped at the water feature. While searching, a Sharppie flew in and ended the search as the birds scattered. I searched the neighborhood crabapples but came up empty!

[cobirds] Boulder goodies, including Lapland Longspurs

Hello, Birders.

Andrew and I had an errand to run this morning, Friday, Nov. 30th, so we stopped by Sombrero Marsh, Boulder County, where the 8 Tundra Swans were still present. As Christian Nunes has noted, one of the bird wears yellow-on-blue neck-band #U856. Learn more about the Tundra Swan banding program here: http://tinyurl.com/SwanNeckBands

Andrew wondered why the band wasn't 958n, and I think that's a good question.

Next we headed over to the Legion Park overlook, where our goal was to count more than 2^9 American Coots, and, ideally, to achieve a prime-number count. We succeeded on the former front, but not on the latter.

And we had a pleasant surprise at Legion Park: two Lapland Longspurs calling and circling low over the overlook. They briefly put down in the shrubby, spiny stuff just east of the overlook, then kept on going. One showed a fair bit of dark below, and was colorful overall, so I guess that makes it an adult male; the other may also have been an adult male, but I wasn't sure.

[cobirds] Baseline Reservoir Tundra Swan neck band recovery info

Birders,

One of the adult Tundra Swans that has been at Baseline Reservoir (Boulder Co.) for a while has a blue neck band inscribed with a U856. I sent in the info to the USGS and here are the results:

Male banded as an adult (born 2008 or earlier) on 7/27/2010 15 miles North of Buckland, Northwest Arctic Borough, Alaska. (Lat: 66.19694; Lon: -161.155). That's about 2800 miles as the swan flies.

No wonder they're so tired.

[cobirds] Boulder Cty, 11/29 (C. Redpoll, Fox & Swamp Sparrows, Rusty Blackbird, Tundra Swans)

The Rusty Blackbird and Swamp Sparrow were present this morning at the previously reported location along Boulder Creek west of 75th.  The Fox Sparrow was also feeding under the junipers west of the Ricky Weiser Wetland at Walden Ponds.  Later (about 1:30 pm) at Baseline Reservoir, I had one Common Redpoll fly overhead, then land briefly in a Cottonwood on the west side of Cherryvale.  The eight Tundra Swans were still at Baseline Res.

[cobirds] Dunlin - El Paso County

COBirders,

Rise" Foster-Bruder called me earlier today and informed me that the Dunlin is still at the small reservoir mudflats on the sw corner of Stapleton and Lambert in the ne sector of Falcon.  I left work to chase the bird and it was still there around 3:30 - 4:00 p.m.  It blends in quite well with the mudflats, but is relatively easy to find. A spotting scope helps.  Thank you Cecile Lee for finding and reporting this bird a while back.

Incidentally, despite all the development around Falcon in the last 20 years, I was surprised by how much water was flowing through the parkways.  I hadn't driven through this area for a while.  The detention ponds offer some good habitat for shorebirds in El Paso County.  Habitat that we don't have much of here with Ramah Reservoir almost always dry and with such distant viewing at Big Johnson Reservoir.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Redpolls at my feeder (Jefferson County)

Well, I was hoping this might happen and today two REDPOLLS, a male and a female, showed up at my feeders in Green Mountain, Lakewood! My first clue was a male at the water feature. I got so-so photos which I will soon post to Flickr-WRShade3. I will let you know if they show up regularly. Meanwhile, they may not be "chaseable."

[cobirds] Swamp Sparrow

[cobirds] Sign up for Christmas Bird Counts now available

Cobirders,

National Audubon has now opened the registration site for signing up to participate in the year’s Christmas Bird Count activities.  CBCs are a 113 year-old tradition in surveying early winter bird populations throughout the US, Canada and now as far south as northern Latin America.  It is a way to join in with about 75,000 other birders in a really fun activity.  I know that once I started doing CBCs I got totally hooked to the point that I have done more than 100 counts over the years.

Go to this NAS website http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count to initiate the sign-up process.  CBC are held during the 22 day period from December 14th to January 5th, so sign up for more than one.  (If you are really inspired [aka, crazy], you can compete with Doug Kibbe and me as we try to hit the double-digit count level!)

CBC Compilers please select a count date as soon as possible to help participants with signing up.
