This is Colorado's 1st fall hawk watch site, and the second hawk watch in Colorado. To get to the site which is along Lookout Mountain Rd. in Golden, enter either Windy Saddle Park or Mount Zion into Google Maps on your favorite navigation app, or enter the coordinates 39.7368,-105.2454. From the parking lot ascend the stone steps to the watch site. while I was struggling up the steps with my scope one young man wanted to know what I was doing, I told him I was looking for raptors.
Weather:
Clear blue sky with minimal clouds to the northwest of the watch. Haze noted over downtown Denver and DIA. Visibility was 6 km at the start and increased to 19 km. at the end of the watch.
Raptor Observations:
20 minutes after I reached the watch I saw 2 RT at the "gap" one migrated and the second was a local. The perfectly blue sky to the east and south of the watch made it difficult to spot raptors. Non-migrant raptors: RT 2, TV 3
Non-raptor Observations:
VGSW 3, WTSW 1, CORA 7,GTTO 1, BGGN 1
Predictions:
Mostly sunny with a high near 91F. Slight chance of showers in the afternoon. Calm winds becoming east 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon.
