This is the Colorado Rare Bird Alert for Friday, January 11, 2019, sponsored by Denver Field Ornithologists.

Rare, out of place and out of season species include:

(*) indicates new information on this species; CAPITAL LETTERS are used for very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird Records Committee.

BARNACLE GOOSE

Note this is a rare vagrant to Eastern North America; and extraordinarily rare in Western North America.  Populations of both of these geese are increasing in their breeding habitat, and as of 2015 there are thought to be approximately twice as many worldwide Barnacles (880K) as Pink-Footed (410K). Note that Barnacle Geese are for sale as collector’s/barnyard specimens to a much greater degree than Pink-Footed Geese. Barnacle Geese are sold as close to Colorado as at least Wisconsin and Michigan, and, so far, no midwestern or western state with sightings have included this bird on its state list. Stay tuned to CFO’s website to see what the rare bird committee ultimately decides, but this might be your only chance to try to see one (in 880,000).
