I should have mentioned that the road down into the campground is closed for the winter up near Weld CR77. It is about a mile walk from the gate to where the redpolls were along Crow Creek ne of the Group Area. Not sure what to make of a couple vehicles and a trailer down in the campground. I think the big RV is that of the hosts which is winterized and apparently will be there until next spring. Near the Picnic Shelter was a trailer and a pick-up truck. This may be a contractor working to cut dead trees in the campground to whom the USFS gave a key. Not sure. I saw a motion detection camera set up in a small honeylocust in the southwest corner, apparently by a hunter, and there is a camo tent along the creek way out north, that appears to be that of a hunter or "resident". All this is FYI if you plan to go out there in search of redpolls.

Highlights from Crow Valley Campground near Briggsdale (Weld)

COMMON REDPOLL (35) - first one seen in cottonwoods near the main Picnic Shelter, big flock was in the northeast part of the entire area, ne of the Group Area, out the northeasteern gate e of primitive camping spots ("Mourning Dove Trail") along the fenceline leading to the Work Center. Photos below are two different individuals taken along Crow Creek way out northeast.

Golden-crowned Kinglet (1f) - southwest corner

Townsend's Solitaire (11)

Lapland Longspur (few flyovers heard giving both "teeuw" and rattle)

The redpolls seemed very nervous, never spent much time in any one tree or place, sort of zoomed all over the place along the creek.

Highlights of Jackson Lake State Park (Morgan)

Snow Goose (45) - flock flying over high, might have been a few Ross's but up too high to tell for sure by the time I detected them

Bald Eagle (11)

White Pelican (4)

Western Grebe (2)

California Gull (estimate 5)

Herring Gull (at least 20)

Ring-billed Gull (very few)

Merlin (1)

Watching a gathering of local law enforcement do defensive/offensive driving training on a closed off section of road along west side, complete with extreme braking/screeching of tires

Jackson was like glass, VERY few birds on it. Most of the gulls (only 20) were on the northwesternmost boat launch jetty which I could not get to because of the closed road. Nothing of interest that I could find in the Russian-olive thickets between the Visitor Center and the res (that is, NO yellow-rumps, hermit thrushes, varied thrushes, long-eared owls, northern cardinals, spotted towhees or Harris's/white-throated sparrows). I might have heard a ruby-crowned kinglet but could not confirm.

Dear Brandon,
Thanks so much for the post. I was looking at the map and find that the
Bonny Count is canceled this year? And no information is yet available for
Crook. Is there another place that you are looking outside the map?
Thanks for your help,

Hi all

On the westside of the reservoir, near the rowing shack, an, all black buteo, (not showing any brown tones to the body) was flying back and forth close to the water. When the hawk banked the upper tail was clearly white, washed with some black smudging along the outer upper tail. Also in flight the white under wing feathers, dramatically contrasted with the rest of the black body. In short I was fortunate to have experience a field guide view of a "Harlan's" Hawk, now a distinctive race to the Red-tailed Hawk.

The Harlan's Hawk was discovered by Audubon near St. Francisville, Louisiana sometime close to 1831. He thought the hawk was a new species and initially named it the "Black Warrior" in honor of his friend Richard Harlan. Audubon was very excited about his new find and in his letter to Harlan he described the hawk's distinctive features, but finished the letter with "I'll skin it soon." !!

Richard Harlan was a close friend to Audubon. He helped finance several of Audubon's expeditions as well as purchasing the excess specimens from the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Science from John Kirk Townsend's western expedition. Many of those purchased specimens turned out to be new species, which Audubon then used as models for his magnificent Birds of America.

Jared Del Rosso <jared.delrosso@gmail.com>: Nov 28 06:53AM -0800

Yesterday morning (11/27), I was joined by a dozen magpies, four Spotted Towhees, three flickers, and three scrub jays in my west Centennial yard (Arapahoe). The scrub jay number was a high count for me in the county.

This morning, the towhees outdid themselves. Five foraged for millet near my feeders. I've had this many in my yard before, but not in a while. I counted two males, two females, and one too deep in the brush to figure. About a dozen magpies, too, which perched in my neighbors' trees, ominously watching over my empty platform feeder. I dropped a handful of peanuts in there for them, and they had the feeder empty again within a minute or two.
