The Westcliffe CBC was held on Saturday, January 2. Nine participants divided into four groups. Many thanks to all the participants for contributing to a great CBC! Some of you have to travel a bit to get to Westcliffe, and I really appreciate your effort.
It was a great result--we got 52 species, the second best. We have had only 4 years over 50 (for 30+ CBC's), the record being 54 in 1998. What a great effort!
Highlights as follows: N. Goshawk-only 1 other year; American Wigeon-only 1 other year; Spotted Towhee-only 3 other years; W.T. Sparrow-only 1 other year; W. Meadowlark=only 1 other year.
All three Rosy-Finches were found in two locations.
The 2015-16 # of birds was 1362, which is more than the 24 year average of 934. But what is more interesting is that of the following species, only one (1) bird was found: G. Eagle, N. Goshawk, Ferruginous Hawk; W. Snipe; P. Falcon; Red-breasted Nuthatch, T. Solitaire; W.T. Sparrow, Song Sparrow and R.W. Blackbird. Some of these are always in low numbers, but some not.
Thanks again! Hope to see you next year!
