[cobirds] White-winged Dove - specifics

CoBirders,
I found the WWDO in a residential area, on White Rock Circle 2 houses down from Spine Rd.  There were a few Eurasian Collared-Doves close by as well.

Hope it stays in the area.

Peter

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Count results

Hi all,

All the results for the 48 Colorado Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) are on the CBC Website or will be very soon.  You can look at the results at http://netapp.audubon.org/CBCObservation/CurrentYear/ResultsByCount.aspx  (then for the Country -- find Untied States and then for the State -- find Colorado).  There are 5 pages of Colorado CBCs.  I'm reviewing all the counts in Colorado, and waiting for a few rare birds to be documented.  If you participated in any Colorado CBC, can you look over the results for each count you went on, and make sure your name is on the list, and look over the species list, and see if there is any errors of any kind.  If you signed up for a CBC, and didn't go on that count, please look to see if your name is still on the list.  If you photographed a bird of note on a Colorado CBC, please make sure to send me the photo.  Many compilers have sent me photos and documentations for rare birds on their CBC, that I THANK them all.

The following species were reported on a Colorado CBC(s) this year, these need to be documented (if they haven't been yet).  The CBRC Website is very easy to use and you should be able to copy and paste your finished rare bird form to me.  These are all CBRC Review Species.

Eurasian Wigeon
Glaucous-winged Gull
Glaucous-winged x Herring Gull hybrid
Acorn Woodpecker
Eastern Towhee
Red Fox Sparrow
Golden-crowned Sparrow
Snow Bunting (southern Colorado)
Eastern Meadowlark
Purple Finch
Common Redpoll (southern Colorado or new county records)
Hoary Redpoll

Also, the following birds reported are quite rare in winter in Colorado that were reported on Colorado CBC(s) this year, and I think the CBRC would be interested in documentation on these, because of the date or location.

Red-bellied Woodpecker (west of normal range)
Hammond's Flycatcher
Eastern Phoebe
Gray Jay (at lower elevations)
Western Palm Warbler
Chipping Sparrow
Sage Sparrow
Common Grackle (unexpected locations)
Pine Grosbeak (lower elevations)

I big thanks to Chris Wood and Tony Leukering (former Colorado CBC Regional Editors) for looking over some of the photos and details submitted for Colorado CBCs this year, their advice is always very helpful on deciding what to do with some of the sightings on Colorado CBCs.

[cobirds] Glaucous Gull Cherry Creek State Park (Arapahoe Co.)

I made a quick visit to Cherry Creek State Park mid-day today following the conclusion of some business in the Tech Center.  The reservoir is still 80-90 percent frozen, but there were some birds present.  Notable was a 1st of 2nd cycle Glaucous Gull.

[cobirds] Boulder White-winged Dove & Great-tailed Grackle hang-out

CoBirders,
I detoured through Gunbarrel this morning, hoping to bump into one of the BOWA flocks that many have reported, but instead found a White-winged Dove.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/pgburke/8517300508/in/photostream

In the afternoon, I visited Stern's Lake in the Carolyn Holmberg preserve in Broomfield. Alas, no large falcon... But I did come across a large flock of Great-tailed Grackles -- 80+ birds. I recall others had posted seeing many GTGR flying to a roost in the area... Also at the preserve was a second-year Bald Eagle, an adult male Northern Harrier and singing Western Meadowlark.

Good birding,
Peter Burke

[cobirds] large falcon - Boulder CO

CObirders,

This morning about 7:20 I got a quick (5s, from about 75-100m with naked eyes) look at a very large gray falcon flying near US 36 along the E side of Davidson Mesa (Louisville.)  It gave the impression of being very bulky, barrel-chested, and broad-winged.  Its flapping motion was stiff, shallow, and seemed heavy-winged compared to a prairie or peregrine falcon.  I got no view of the underwing or head, unfortunately.

I'm quite familiar with PRFAs and PEFAs and this bird just didn't have the same look.  But based on just a quick and fairly unsatisfying view, I am not confident about reporting that there's a gyrfalcon in Boulder County.  Still, anyone who happens to be in the area might keep an eye out for the possibility.

[cobirds] Today's Birding, continued

Sorry about the premature "send" of my post.
At LUNA Reservoir, we had a SNOW BUNTING fly overhead calling repeatedly. In the reservoir, a scad of ducks were present including more than 80 Canvasback, over 30 Ruddy Ducks, about 800 N Shovelers, an adult THAYER'S GULL, and 22 GREATER SCAUP.
At Panama Reservoir, there are now 39 Am White Pelicans, about 1000 Redhead/RN Ducks, 900 Common Mergs.

Note: the Brockway Drive area is in Boulder County between Boulder and Lafayette. The Anthem Ranch Ponds in Broomfield are mostly frozen and totally gull-free. The nearby Siena Pond is nearly totally open and gull-free

[cobirds] Panama and Luna Reservoirs + Lafayette area

Greeting All
Today, Cathy Sheeter and I visited several spots from the Lafayette area to LUNA Reservoir in sw. Weld County
Along Brockway, a quarter mile or so east of 96th we found a flock of 50 or so BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS. Nearby, there was an EASTERN TOWHEE X SPOTTED TOWHEE. The towhee hybrid had very few spots on wings and back, huge white undertail spots, and called like a Spotted Towhee.

Sunday, March 31th             Ptarmigan Finding -- Guanella Pass
Leader, Paul Slingsby This trip is limited to 8 persons so please register with the leader (303-422-3728). Meet the leader, 0900 at the Stegosaurus Park and Ride. We will car pool to Guanella Pass, approximately 60 miles from our meeting place. Have clothing suitable for both windy and very cold weather, the pass is almost 12,000 ft. in altitude and is especially exposed to wind. Our trip begins late to arrive at the pass during the warmest part of the day. We'll also hope to avoid rush hour on I-70. Bring binoculars, spotting scopes and 2-way radios if you have them. Plan to eat lunch at the pass, possibly in the car. We should be back to Stegosaurus by 3 pm. We will also look for other bird species that spend winter high in the mountains. Guanella Pass has not had great amounts of snow in recent years and many areas blow free of snow. Bring snowshoes if you have them, but most likely we will be able to walk everywhere we need to walk without them. Traction devices for shoes (Yaktracks for example) and walking sticks can be helpful. We will walk less than a mile at the pass, but plan to walk more at other places we will visit for additional mountain bird species. I will scout the trip before the day and will also check the weather. In the event that weather is prohibitive, we will change our destination to Bear Creek Lake Park. (Day pass required.) Ducks, cormorants, avocets and bluebirds will have begun migration by this date. Water should be open in the ponds and in Clear Creek so we should have an interesting day even if we can't visit the ptarmigan. Stegosaurus Park and Ride is familiar to visitors to the RMBO spring Hawkwatch. Take I-70 to exit 259, go south on Colorado Highway 26 for about 200 yards. Stegosaurus is on the left. We will meet near the lower, south, end of the lot.

[cobirds] waxwings

There's a crab apple tree around the corner that's held it's apples all winter.  I've been watching it wondering if a flock of waxwings might find it.  The other day I saw some birds on the tree and sure enough it was a flock of cedar waxwings.  I ran back home to get my photo gear and got some shots.  You can see them here on my blog - http://birdsbybill.blogspot.com/

Haven't seen them since they about stripped the tree in two days.  Tree is on the south side of the pond as you enter the Lake Arbor neighborhood in Arvada.
