[cobirds] SE Colorado July 15th (Laughing Gulls and Neo Cormorant)

Mark Peterson and I did some birding and dragonfly looking in Southeastern Colorado today, from the Kansas border, east of Holly in Prowers County, west through Kiowa, Bent, Otero, and Crowley Counties.

The best birds of the day were at Lake Holbrook, Otero County, near Rocky Ford.  Two adult Laughing Gulls and the immature Neotropic Cormorant that was first seen back on July 1st.

The "Mike" Higbee SWA, east of Lamar, Prowers County, we saw the continuing nearly breeding plumage Common Loon, also a Green Heron, and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo was calling.

Other Yellow-billed Cuckoos were also at the Holly Rest Stop in Prowers County and at Dawn Ponds SWA, in Bent County.

Dickcissels were easy to hear east of Lamar in Prowers County, also at Neenoshe Reservoir in Kiowa County.

There was one Upland Sandpiper in the field east of Lamar in Prowers County.

Neenoshe Reservoir (Kiowa County), Thurston Reservoir (Prowers County), Lake Cheraw and Lake Holbrook (both in Otero County) all had a few shorebirds.  Lots of Snowy Plovers as usual at Cheraw and Neenoshe.  A breeding plumaged Sanderling was a treat at Neenoshe Reservoir, also there, there were 52 or so Mountain Plovers.  Baird's Sandpipers were at several of these locations.  A migrant Solitary Sandpiper was in a ditch, near Lake Henry, Crowley County.

We saw just over 90 species of birds, it was quite hot out there, though it was nice to get out there, also thanks to Mark for finding us many colorful dragonflies, that I was able to photograph.

Good birding and dragonflying,
