This summarizes the results from our 33rd Denver Urban CBC; we still have a handful of birds to tweak, but this provides an accurate picture of our count. We covered all but two sections (which might have changed the raptor totals), with masks & distancing and fewer counters.
We tallied 39,887 birds of 91 species: fewer than average birds (40,069), more species than average (84).
Several 'Yard birds' exceeded averages, though not because of more feeder reports. We had high counts for
Blue Jay (80),
Black-capped Chickadee (465),
Bushtit (115),
White-breasted Nuthatch (93; highest ever cf. previous high of 60),
Brown Creeper (15),
American Goldfinch 946),
Pine Siskin (35),
Spotted Towhee (34, ave. 8, highest ever); also
W. Meadowlark (111),
Red-winged Blackbird (1234).
Duck numbers declined below average, but Hooded Mergansers continue to burgeon (210, the 3rd highest count cf. an average of 101).
We had low counts of Ring-billed Gulls (643, 2nd lowest), Starling (1705 vs. 4307 ave.), House Sparrows (206 vs. 1361 ave., 3rd lowest) and House Finches (668 cf. 1178 ave.)
We tallied an average number of raptors (that included 81 Bald Eagles) and fewer ducks than usual (several lakes covered with ice).
Unusual species included a Northern Cardinal seen near Cherry creek Res. State Park by Joey Negrean and a Swamp Sparrow at Rocky Mtn Arsenal NWR, plus two count week birds, Harris's Sparrow and Golden-crowned Sparrow.
