[cobirds] Interesting Crow Observation, Estes Park, Larimer Co.

We're enjoying a nice wintry Thanksgiving visit at our place in Estes Park.

I want to share an interesting observation.  On this very windy and cold Saturday morning I eschewed my usual morning walk down to buy the newspaper (a daily excuse to do some early birding) and drove instead.  On the way back to our home, I saw well over 20 American Crows in the road up ahead.  I assumed they were feeding on road kill, so I drove up slowly.  They flew off and all I could see was a large quantify of sand on the pavement, presumably spread by the highway folks after the 15 inches of snow we got on Monday/Tuesday.  My guess is that the crows were ingesting the sand as grit for their crops.  I have seen groups of small birds doing this on occasion, but it was very interesting first for me to see the highly social crows engaged in this communal behavior.

[cobirds] Red-breasted Merganser and Barrow's Goldeneys, South Platte near 88th, Adams Co

A DFO field trip this morning found 28 Red-breasted Mergansers on the Thornton Gravel Pond near 99th and Colorado Blvd.

On the river between 88th and the small dam were at least two male Barrow's Goldeneyes. (Both species were spotted by Burke Angstman.)

Also along the river was a Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk.

A White-winged Dove has visited our home bird feeders for the 3rd time this week, in spite of the heavy snow. A nice winter visitor.

This is good news because the population of Kirtland's is now able to stand on its own, at least as
regards cowbirds.  The Mio Michigan community know birding tourism is a cash cow, so they will
hopefully continue maintaining the breeding grounds with jack pines and low-growing vegetation.

If you haven't been to Mio, Michigan (or the other community where Audubon conducts tours), go!
You are virtually guaranteed to see Kirlands in May. Cheers for a conservation success story.

[cobirds] Random acts of gratefulness: sandhill cranes, bushtits, and more Larimer County

This morning about 11:30 we saw 8 sandhill cranes over Reservoir Ridge, headed south east. Nearby at our bird feeders at about 12:30, we counted 16 bushtits.
Then at Watson Lake this afternoon, there was one dipper and one kingfisher on the river.
Happy Thanksgiving! We are pretty lucky.

[cobirds] Boulder County

All,

Having dug out of over 2' of snow on Tuesday, I ventured around Boulder County this morning.  There was a Greater White-fronted Goose on the south side of Valmont Res, and a family of 5 Tundra Swans (2 adults, 3 juveniles) happily swimming in the middle of Boulder Res.  Lageman Res is mostly frozen, and there were no geese at Dodd Res, so I went to the east part of the county hoping to see a Longspur in with the Horned Larks.  Instead, on N 115th St south of Oxford Road I found 3 Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches eating by the side of the road.  I cannot remember seeing them this far east in Boulder County before.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Peter Gent, Boulder.

[cobirds] American Dippers in Clear Creek, Adams Ctny, today

Hi COBirders
I found two American Dippers east of Lowell Blvd. this morning. One was just below the check dam at Lowell. I watched it until it flew into the waterfall created by the dam. The other was under the I-76 bridges about 400 yards east of Lowell.
Happy Thanksgiving, Bob Canter, Denver
