[cobirds] NE Colorado foray

Folks,

Steve Larson and I ventured out to northeast Colorado, primarily to find Sharp-tailed Grouse, shorebirds and early migrants. We scored on the grouse along Weld hwy 134 with 9 birds in 4 locations. Going early seems to be the key for success here.

On the shorebird front, Jumbo and Prewitt reservoirs are filled to capacity with little or no room for shorebirds. Red Lion SWA has decent shorebird habitat and should be checked in the coming weeks for migrant shorebirds. Moving west along highway 34, we found good shorebird conditions at Weld county Rd. 59 and Loloff reservoir.  We and others (Norm Lewis's group) found a Whimbrel, Marbled Godwits, Least Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers, Willets, Wilson's Phalarope, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, White-faced Ibis, Black-necked Stilts, and American Avocets,  Coupled with the seemingly lack of ephemeral playas in eastern Colorado, Red Lion and the ponds around Bebe Draw could be productive for the next 6 weeks.

Passerines were few and far between, with a handfull of Orange-crowned Warblers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Say's Phoebes, Vesper Sparrows, Field Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows.

Good birding...
