A warbler morning.  Added 2 new species for the season - an Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler and a Chestnut-sided Warbler, only the 4th CSWA ever caught at Barr (the other 3 were in 2011, 1996 and 1993!)  A total of 40 new today:

Warbling Vireo 2
House Wren 2
Gray Catbird 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 4
Yellow Warbler 4
Chestnut-sided Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Townsend's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 22

We will be open 6 days per week (closed Mondays), weather permitting, through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back at the station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30 (closing earlier now because of heat). School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Mississippi Kite -Golden- Jefferson CO

Birders,
About 35 min ago I had 2 birds flying south along the foothills that I would call Mississippi Kites.   They were falcon shaped, gray, larger than Kestrels, and had the giss of Mississippi Kites.

[cobirds] The annual Blackbird Bonanza at Jim Hamm Nature Area has begun!

Had a nice surprise this week when the annual phenomenon of huge numbers of Yellow-Headed & Red-winged BB's, Starlings and Grackles started at Jim Hamm Nature Area in Longmont.  Was out last weekend (8/25) and had zero RWBB's and about 400 YHBB.  Went out yesterday and saw 3,000+ (?) birds.  YHBB's are probably 75% of the total count.  Hard to to get a count, see video here: https://youtu.be/jyJU7m3KeNc  2:15 long, nice shot at 2:03.

If the migration patterns are like the last two years, the numbers will increase dramatically through September, as in 15,000+ birds.  The evening gathering is pretty neat, a ton of noise as the come in to the cattails/reeds to roost.  Morning is by far the best, last two days the large departure murmurs were around 6:30 am.  Had a bonus Osprey this morning and two juvenile Coopers's Hawks yesterday.

Jim Hamm is at the intersection of 17th and Pace in Longmont.  If coming from out of town, I'd suggest accessing via Southbound Pace as it's a right turn, there's a TON of traffic on Pace St. in the morning.  They're building a new subdivision right across the street on 17th, will be interesting to see if all of the construction (they're still moving dirt vs building) has an impact.

I will be posting again over the weeks to come as the numbers (should) increase and call it the "Blackbird Bonanza" the weekend of 9/15-16.  Would love to see some fellow birders out there, especially to help estimate how many birds are actually there (hint: it's a LOT!).

Happy (black) birding!

[cobirds] Lake Loveland [Larimer]

Hi all

Lake Loveland has lots of exposed lake bottom in northwest corner with lots of loafing gulls (hundred or so) which I scanned after lunch at nearby Artie's Pizza--looked to all be Ring-billed, California and two Franklin's Gull along with half dozen or so Snowy Egret. Just wanted to pass along the status of the "gull beach" mainly.

[cobirds] News from Crow Valley Campground

Hi

The main campground area it was quiet. One contributing factor was at a camp site in middle of prime migrate habitat on the south west side was a large, Boxer/Mastiff with a ferocious sounding bark, convincing enough to have me scurrying back to the car, locking the car doors.

In the pasture just north of the campground there were some interesting bird comparisons. In an area including tall cottonwoods with dead branches were Ĺ‚about 4-5 Olive-sided Flycatchers. Also there were 1-2 Western-wood Pewees in the area. It was interesting to study the size and flying comparisons for each Contopus species. Actually in the greater area there 4 times as many O-s fly as there were robins. Also had good views of side by side comparisons of Sage and Brown Thrashers

[cobirds] Re: Gulls? Bird ID help

Franklin's Gull.  They gather in flocks and forage extensively on insects and worms fattening up for the flight to the west coast of South America.

These gull looking birds have been swooping around in a flock of 20+, circling (eating bugs?) early dusk for the past two nights in my neighborhood. Terrible photo quality, but does anyone know what they are, and why they're suddenly here? Thanks!

[cobirds] San Luis Valley Birding Trip Invitation

Hi all:

Well it is looking like peak migration is upon us and there are a LOT of birds passing through the San Luis Valley. So next Friday, Sept 7th, I will be leading a birding trip to the Valley hotspots. We will meet at the Monte Vista refuge Headquarters 6 miles south of Monte Vista on Hwy 15 at 0700 am.  Will do a quick sign in and then carpool onward to spend the day looking for birding treasures. Please make sure you gas up your vehicle as our travel distances can be long.  I am planning a full day, from 7 to about 4:00 pm, so bring a lunch, scope, guidebooks, cameras, binocs and jacket as necessary. Bring walkie talkies too. Half days are possible. Expect moderate hiking.

The fall migration here has been phenomenal.  Let me know if you are interested.

[cobirds] Re: Black Swifts - Rio Grande County

Thanks David for forwarding that message.

I have seen this fall gathering of Black Swifts a few times in my 35 years of record keeping here. Most of the time, I was camped in the South San Juan mountains and would see large numbers overhead. But I have only seen these large gatherings once or twice in the flat of the San Luis Valley. I believe the aphids on the trees those in flight had a lot to do with yesterday's incredible observation. I am headed there today to see if they are still around.

[cobirds] Snowy Egret Using Bill Vibration to Fish/Larimer

COBirders,

Yesterday at Long Pond, Ft. Collins, Larimer County, I shot some video of a Snowy Egret using bill vibration to hunt fish. This is a known behavior (which I have never seen before) that is very interesting to watch. You can see the video on YouTube at the link below. It is available in HD and I would suggest making the video as large as possible to really see what the egret is doing.

[cobirds] Bent county --- WHITE IBIS and Least Terns

COBirders,

Just a quick update, the WHITE IBIS continued this evening at Gageby Creek and Bent county road JJ (AKA Van's Marsh).  As Duane mentioned, if you go down the two track road that is just to the west of the marsh area you can get a bit closer.  Be aware that if you choose to drive down this road you may get scratches on your vehicle in a couple of spots.

As I headed back towards Lamar I made a quick stop at the end of road 20 where you can see the far west end of John Martin reservoir.  There was a family of four LEAST TERNs working the area, one adult and three youngsters.  The adult was actively hunting and then feeding the youngsters what it would catch.

These gull looking birds have been swooping around in a flock of 20+, circling (eating bugs?) early dusk for the past two nights in my neighborhood. Terrible photo quality, but does anyone know what they are, and why they're suddenly here? Thanks!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report, Barr Lake Station 8/30/18

A steady stream of birds today; we whined a lot about the mosquitoes, but enjoyed the bird activity - caught 57 new, 1 return from 2010, plus another 23 that we had banded earlier this season.  Here's the breakdown of those caught for the first time this year:

Black-capped Chickadee 1, banded in 2010
House Wren 16, many of them very young
Orange-crowned Warbler 4
Yellow Warbler 3

Common Yellowthroat 3
Wilson's Warbler 21
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Chipping Sparrow 1

We will be open 6 days per week (closed Mondays), weather permitting, through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back at the station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30 (closing earlier now because of heat). School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Re: [cobirds] White Ibis yes

All,

I saw the adult White Ibis at 4 p.m. today, but it took a little work.
Shut out at Bent County Road JJ at Gageby Creek, I tried an option. I
drove a little bit west to Van's Grove. I took a two-track road exactly
south of the entrance to Van's Grove. I cautiously drove 1/4 mile south,
and reached a clearing. Just before the two-track hit a sandy spot, I
parked. I was a couple of hundred yards closer to the mud flat where
herons, egrets and pelicans roost. Since this location is so far west,
silt from the Arkansas River accumulates at high water levels, and
walking very far is impossible. But. . ., a lot more of the mud flat is
visible than at Road JJ. In a few minutes, the White Ibis flew in, and I
was able to see it well and photograph it poorly.

A word of caution. Trying to drive too far may result in a costly towing
bill. Proceed with prudence.

This was my second adult White Ibis in Bent County. The first was in the
1990s, at the exact same spot. That bird was north of Road JJ at the
Gageby Marsh, close enough that binoculars weren't necessary.

[cobirds] Re: White Ibis yes

This is the location that Van Truan found the juvenile Sharp-tailed Sandpiper that many people got to see in the late 1990s, the 2nd state record.  This is the 2nd time a White Ibis has been seen at this location!

In case anyone is not familiar with the location of "Van's Marsh," it is in Bent County on road JJ.
From the small town of Fort Lyons drive east about 6 km on Bent County Rd JJ
It's where the road dips a bit to cross a bay of John Martin Reservoir.

[cobirds] Yellow-bellied Flycatcher-Colo. City

A Yellow-bellied Flycatcher graced Greenhorn Creek 845 AM .25 mile west of the Colorado City Sewage Treatment Plant, SW Pueblo County.  Watched it for about a minute, then lost it & could not refind it. But optimists can try  by driving a short distance west of the Plant on dirt road where it forks. Then walk SW towards dead tree along mostly dry creek bed. The bird was in an extensive patch of willows where creek bends to the west. This bird was not only a state lifer but my 400th bird for Pueblo County.

Other area birds of interest:

Solitary Sandpiper 8(28-9)18 Metro Lake,  W. Graneros Rd, Colorado City

Philadelphia Vireo 8-24-18 My yard, Birch Drive, Rye

2 Clay-colored Sparrows 8-29-18 Y-b Flycatcher area

[cobirds] Holbrook Res in Otero

For those who will be venturing down SE in the coming weeks, I wanted to mention that of all the places we visited on 8-27 to 8-28 our best shorebirding overall was at Holbrook Rservoir in Otero Co.: best viewing (need to walk out to the water edge, though) and good numbers. They were concentrated from the S side around to the NE. If one walked from the area where the perimeter road leaves the NE corner of the lake edge there it would be a good way to see the most. We did not see anything particularly unusual there, but there were many shorebirds we did not view close up in the NE part of the lake, because we did not go to the shoreline in that part of the lake. But there were lots of shorebirds there in that part of it.

Anyway, I noticed there were few recent visits reported to eBird and wanted to alert birders of the good opportunity.

[cobirds] Crow Valley Campground (Weld) on 28August2018

Crow Valley Campground was very slow yesterday.

Highlights:

Cassin's Vireo (1)

Willow Flycatcher (3 first-fall)  Since I also had three together the other day at Van's Grove, makes me wonder if it is common for this species to migrate in family groups.

Willow Flycatcher, first-fall (brown wingbars), I think the same individual in all three pics, nw corner of campground near Group Shelter.

ID features: biggish empid, essentially lacking eyering (thin one visible at close range), short primary extension (helpful when certain views makes one think this large empid might be a pewee which has a much more pronounced primary extension), somewhat rear-crested in certain views (rather round-crowned in others), big wide tail with whitish outer retrices, only utterance was "whit" (unlike pewee), lower mandible extensively yellow in certain views (annoyingly dark in others suggesting Dusky/Hammonds), throat white (see middle pic), back either olive or tan depending on lighting (compare left pic with right pic).  I suppose voice would be best distinguishing feature from Alder, besides the fact there were three individuals which would constitute nearly a seasonal tally for the entire eastern plains if Alder.

Red-headed Woodpecker (1 imm.), out north along Mourning Dove Trail

Townsend's Solitaire (1, early for this species at low elevation (by about 2 weeks?)), in area of Main Picnic Shelter

Wilson's Warbler (at least 6, only warbler species)

Two birders from the Netherlands!  I would imagine after their visit yesterday they wondered why Crow Valley is listed in the guide books as a mecca for birds.  In three hours, I think I had a total of 53 individual birds.  Had these visitors only known, they could have gone over to nearby Briggsdale and padded their total with an equal number of House Sparrows and broken the century mark.

FYI, there is a pretty nice playa with shorebirds and ducks a few miles north of Crow Valley on the east side of CR77.  The big playa that had extensive water this spring a mile or so w of Grover on the s side of CR122 is completely dried up.  I tried to visit A&B #1 Reservoir on CR124 a few miles w of CR77 and was discouraged from such folly by the steady parade of dusty tanker truck traffic.
