[cobirds] Fort Collins Miscellany (Larimer)

Today I visited a new area of Fort Collins at the invitation of a friend who said he was "seeing interesting ducks" at his neighborhood pond.  The pond is called "Willow Springs", I guess.  I can't find it named on any map.  The pond is sw of the intersection of Battlecreek Drive and S. Timberline Road in southeastern Fort Collins.  Waterfowl present today on this totally ice free pond were Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Ducks, Mallards, Cackling Geese and Canada Geese.

While trying to figure out where the pond was and how to access it from inside the nearby condo maze, I saw some interesting things.  A flock of approximately 15 Red Crossbills (sounded like Type 2s) was coming down to a small drainage to drink.  A Red-breasted Nuthatch was exploring roofs and gutters.  At one juncture he got what looks like a winged carpenter ant but it might be a darkened European Paper Wasp cadaver pulled from its cell in a roof corner comb.  Tough to tell dead insects in the beak of a bird 15 feet away.

A Downy Woodpecker was percussing various objects.  Most notably he checked out adventitious root knots protruding above the grass at the base of a cottonwood (not sure what would be in these) and goldenrod gall fly galls (see below).

(1) Goldenrod plant with three galls (left), (2) opened gall showing two fly larvae (Eurosta solidaginis) which cause these swellings (middle) and (3) downy woodpecker (right) going after goldenrod gall fly maggots (gall is right in front of its chest).

The wonderful red Fox Sparrow first found at the Northern Colorado Environmental Learning Center by Andy Bankert continues.  Yesterday and today it was in the exact site where first reported (southeast of the intersection of the Wilcox and Alden Trails a few tenths of a mile south of the east end of the suspension bridge).  I watched the bird at length both yesterday and today and found its behavior most interesting.  Whatever it is after is down in the leaf litter.  This species is a well-known doublefoot scratcher, similar to towhees and certain other sparrows, including the juncos it hangs with.  What I had never seen before was scratching with a twist.  A full twist, that is.  Its normal posture is head-down and its scratching is modest.  But every once in a while, it raises its head, stands on it clawtip toes, and does a rapid 360-degree spin.  Ice skaters at the upcoming Olympics would receive high marks if they could bust such a move.  Presumably this flips particularly thick or matted litter.  In an attempt to discern what the red sparrow and juncos were getting, several times a minute, from said leaf litter, I got down on my knees, scrunched my trifocals so as to use the reader layer at the bottom to best advantage and scratched back leaves with my hands.  Over a period of 20 minutes and exposing an area of approximately one square meter, I found exactly ZERO insects, one snail barely a mm across, lots of deer droppings, and some seeds of an unidentified plant that might be the answer to the puzzle.  Not exactly the cornucopia I was expecting.  Once again I marvel at the survival skills of birds, once again I walked away stumped.  But that gorgeous sparrow was worth the effort.  If you are looking for it, approach the described area QUIETLY AND SLOWLY.  This bird has been pursued by dozens of birders, many of them loud and impatient, playing tapes, etc.  It is VERY WARY, very difficult to see.  Find the junco flock, stay back and just watch all the scratchers.  It is usually the farthest one away.  When approached or warned of something by nervous juncos, it usually goes up a short ways into the boxelder trees.  Patience usually is rewarded by it returning to the leaf litter but sometimes this takes 15-30 minutes.

I have looked for the Harris's Hawk out off Prospect Road near the Welcome Center at I-25 yesterday and today and not seen it (which means NOTHING with that bird).  It works a huge area, is quite active, never seems to sit in the same place for very long or two days in a row.

[cobirds] May Convention(s)

Cobirders,

I hope you are all making plans for this year’s CFO Convention.  I believe it is the 55th CFO Convention, but the first to be located in Longmont with its access to plains, prairies, foothills, and mountains.  As always the CFO Convention from May 17th to 20th will offer you all sorts of opportunities for fieldtrips, paper sessions, evening entertainment, and a smash-up banquet.

While I don’t want to discourage you from attending the CFO Convention, there is some competition that weekend.  If you seek something different you might consider the Nebraska Ornithologists Union Spring Meetings at Fort Robinson, Nebraska in the northwest corner of the state on May 18-20.  I’ve attended the last two NOU Meetings and loved the friendly comradery and great birding.  If you want more information on the NOU Spring Meetings (or on the NOU in general), please contact Robin Harding, Vice President of the NOU at snowbunting@rcom-ne.com

[cobirds] Rocky Mount Arsenal, Adams County

With my day off I went out to roam around Rocky Mountain Arsenal and though I had to work to find them I did find some nice birds. I got a great look at a pair of Ferruginous hawks along side of the road. This road is part of the new expansion for the wildlife drive. If you have not seen it it is an extra 7 ish miles of exploring in an area previously unavailable except by tour bus. It is part of the new Bison rang expansion. To reach this new area drive past Lower Derby Lake (which now has a parking lot and a observation deck) and just before the road turns to gravel (the way to Blue Stem Lake) there is a left hand turn. It becomes a one way road after a bit so you must enter here. Since it is part of Bison Range you must stay in your car. At the end is a parking lot for Rattle Snake Hill, and a short loop trail. It's great to have some new options at such a great location.

[cobirds] Harris's Sparrow still present, First Creek At Denver, Denver County

HI,
After roaming around Rocky Mountain Arsenal I went over to check out First Creek to see if the Barn Owls where around (I did not find them) or if that Harris's Sparrow was still around that was reported a while ago (I can't remember when and by whom). I did find the Harris's Sparrow to be around. I found it with a flock of White Crowned Sparrows, a Song Sparrow and some Dark Eyed Juncos (Oregon). They where on the other side of the fence in some dead fall under a tree. This was at the intersection of Buckley Road (which is the trail here if you have not been here before) and the other trail heading east and under Pena BLVD.

[cobirds] Open Water

Greetings All

On Sunday, I went off to Kiowa County and found significant open water at Lower and Upper Queens as well as Neenoshe and Neegronda. The latter two had most of the birds, but the most interesting birds by far were on Upper Queens: Two male and one female Barrow's Goldeneye. Not seen since, alas (I couldn't refind them 3 hours later)

In Weld, Windsor Lake has a nice bit of open water, best viewed from south side in AM and from west side in PM, though I had far more birds present in morning (including 2 Thayer's Gulls)

Windsor Reservoir has substantial amount of open water on the south side. Nothing rare, unless you like studying hybrid geese :o)

Woods Lake also has much open water. In PM (or a cloudy AM), I'd go up the road along the lake's west side, find a safe place to park, and then walk down the road until you find an opening to survey the lake. 1 Thayer's and 1 LBB Gull were the best birds there today, but a reasonable number of gulls and lotsa ducks

Drake's Lake has some open water, but gulls seemed unwilling to land with the bevy of eagles on the ice

Black Hollow is still an ice cube

Union has a sliver of water opening -- mostly Mallards.

And the ponds at Firestone have many Aythya. Nothing rare but potential is there.

Cheers

[cobirds] Re: Common redpolls et al., Horsetooth mountain park, Larimer county

The redpolls are back in the same draw, at least 13 of them just now at 7:55 am.

I encountered a flock of nine Common Redpolls in Horsetooth Mountain park today. They were along the hiking trail (footpath) at the first drainage crossing less than a quarter-mile from the trailhead. They were mostly feeding on the ground near the edge of melting snow.

Also seen was a Northern Goshawk and a Sharp-shinned Hawk. The goshawk was flying high over the ridge as if it were moving some distance. The last few days I've had several raptors soaring over the south facing ridge at Horsetooth mountain park including Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and a Rough-legged Hawk.  Red Crossbills are much fewer in number than this time last year, almost non-existent, although I did bump into a flock of 8 today.

Also of note, I had a flock of 10 Evening Grosbeaks stop ever so briefly in my yard in Horsetooth Lake Estates exactly 2 weeks ago today.

[cobirds] Response to email about unusual geese at Stearns lake

I have two similar geese on the ponds at my house that have been here for about five years. They have grown to have more white on their head and neck through the years.
I decided that they were a hybrid of Canada geese and white farm geese or emden geese. One of the features I looked at is that they have a lot of fat underneath their tail, a large white rump that sticks up higher out of the water that is reported to be caused by the amount of fat that they carry there. Their legs were orange/pink when they first came, they're darker now.
They are slightly bigger than the other Canada geese. They became in charge of our geese fairly quickly, have a distinctive, loud honk and are clearly the guard geese for the ponds.

These pictures are from a year and a half ago and their heads and next are much whiter now.

[cobirds] Unusual Goos -- Stearn's Lake (Boulder County) -- additional photos

Sorry -- regarding the hybrid goose I forgot to say that more photos are available on eBird at

[cobirds] Unusual goose at Stearn's Lake (Boulder County) -- Monday Jan 29

This morning Gillian and I found a very unusual goose at Stearn's Lake (southeast Boulder County).
The bird resembled a "Blue" Snow Goose but had an all dark beak and non-standard plumage.

Our best guess is that the bird is a Snow Goose hybrid with either Canada or Cackling Goose.
There is a faint but obvious "grin" patch on the beak, so it is unlikely to be a Ross's Goose hybrid.

There were six Snow Geese this morning at Stearn's Lake -- three "white" and three "Blue".
This the most Snow Geese that I have ever seen at one place in Boulder County.

[cobirds] Re: Pueblo Prairie Warbler, maybe gone 1/27

Someone reported seeing the Prairie Warbler this morning in Pueblo,
not sure why it didn't show up yesterday, when all the other birds
were present. If it is still present, maybe it will still be around
in February, for a first February record of the species for Colorado.
It seems like this bird has become very hard to find, not like in
December when it wasn't too hard to find.
