Hello, Birders.
-- Everybody's signed up now for one or more Colorado CBCs, right? Okay, now what? Here's an idea: Join Colorado Field Ornithologists and Yours Truly for a pre-CBC field workshop, Sat., Dec. 12, 9am till noonish, at Greeenlee Preserve, Boulder County. Our primary focus will be on common, even abundant, birds that can be surprisingly hard to ID on count day--and any other day of the year, for that matter.
We'll learn how to distinguish between Canada geese and cackling geese; we'll try to make sense out of Cassiar juncos and even Ridgway's juncos; and, just for fun, we'll learn how to age ring-billed gulls (with an eye toward finding a mew gull or something). And as time allows, we'll look for some of the recent goodies at Greenlee Preserve and adjoining Waneka Lake: gray catbird, greater white-fronted goose, merlin, bushtit, and, everybody's favorite, African collared-dove.

Of course, we'll cover some of the basics: counting birds in large flocks; what to do about hybrids and spuhs; signing up for the Boulder CBC, I mean, any CBC of your choosing; protocol for paying proper homage to your compiler . . .
This workshop is free and open to the public. All persons welcome; no prior experience necessary. If you've never heard of a Ridgway's Junco, come and learn; if you know how to ID a Ridgway's Junco, please explain it to the rest of us. On-street parking available immediately west of the preserve (Salina Street & vicinity). We will assemble at 9am at the observation deck at the southwest corner of Greenlee Preserve.
