At around 5:30 PM this afternoon, my dog and I saw a Loggerhead Shrike in a fenced in field about a block north of the eastern edge of Congress Park. The shrike was viewable from the sidewalk on Clayton St (the portion running north / south behind Congress) and 10th and 11th avenues. It perched, briefly, on a fenced in area -- which almost has the look of community garden, though I'm not sure that it is -- within the larger, fenced in area.
There were many, many starling, house sparrow, house finch, chipping sparrow, and robin around this field. There may be other birds mixed in, but it was difficult to pick through the sparrow in the grass and the variable songs of the many starling complicating things. A birder with a scope might have better luck, though I'm not sure you could get a clean vantage from the sidewalk.
Later, at Cheesman, six White Pelican flew over, as did a half dozen or so swallow, most of which I failed to ID. I did not see the poorwill, although there continue to be reports of it in the neighborhood.
