I visited Chatfield SP fairly early in the day under dark skies with drizzle. The water level in the reservoir is up a number of inches over a few days ago. The Swim Beach had a Solitary Sandpiper and a Willet, and a gloomy roost of 6 Turkey Vultures flapped gloomily forth into the watery skies. Large numbers of swallows were feeding low over the lake, with an estimated 700 Violet-green Swallows leading in abundance.
-- Walking along the soggy JeffCo side of the South Platte downstream of Kingfisher bridge I had a Northern Waterthrush, MacGillivray's Warbler and Least Flycatcher.
Over at Plum Creek Nature Area knee boots were needed to explore away from the road. Here a pair of Eastern Kingbirds had returned, and there was a Wilson's Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, some Yellow-headed Blackbirds and a flock of 22 White-faced Ibis.
I stopped in at Marston Reservoir (west side) in the early evening. A highlight was an alternate plumaged Black-bellied Plover that flew in calling and landed on the far shore. Also three Semipalmated Plovers, and continuing large numbers of swallows. Two Loggerhead Shrikes were evident in the vegetation on the exposed lake shore. A Lark Sparrow flew by and a Clay-colored Sparrow popped up on the fence near where I was standing.
The personal milestone: today I entered my 10,000th complete eBird checklist from Colorado...and counting.
