COBirders,
-- Our magnificent vagrant has been at the feeder again this morning.
Today is another abnormally warm day in this amazing Colorado fall. Yesterday was sunny, and the air filled with insects; small to medium sized gnat-like fliers (perfect for the hummingbird, I would imagine) and even some butterflies & moths. Today looks like a similarly nice day, starting out a bit windier. The sunrise this morning was off the charts. An iPhone photo cannot do it justice, but maybe it conveys the idea:
One interesting turn is that the hummingbird is having to compete with a Hairy Woodpecker who likes the taste of sugar. I ask it to leave, since it has the seed to eat also, but it clearly has a sweet tooth. Luckily the hummingbird is more persistent than the Hairy is interested, so she gets her turn.
Hopefully the bird will continue to feed & stay nourished, and then soon move on.
