[cobirds] Harris's Sparrow, El Paso County

COBirders,

This past Friday and Saturday mornings I led my Birding for Beginners participants to locations at Fountain Creek Nature Center, the TinselTown Pond off of I-25 and Circle Dr., Prospect Lake and Big Johnson Reservoir in El Paso County.  We had a few good birds each day seeing 50 species on Friday morning and 63 species on Saturday morning between the hours of 7 & 11 AM.

It was especially fun for the participants to see Osprey and Bald Eagle catching fish at Prospect Lake. Today, we saw a Bald Eagle snatch a fish and fly off south.  A half hour later we were able to observe the eagles feeding fish to its two chicks on the nest at Fountain Valley School.  I far as I know this might be the first ever successful Bald Eagle nest in El Paso County if these birds are successful in fledging young.

Best birds for Friday:
1 - Lincoln's Sparrow - Fountain Creek Nature Center
1 - Clark's Grebe - Prospect Lake
2 - Osprey - Prospect Lake
1 - Bald Eagle - Prospect Lake

Best birds for Saturday:
1 - Savannah Sparrow - Prospect Lake
2 - Harris's Sparrow - Fountain Creek Nature Center

Most of the species were waterfowl and other water birds. Also a smattering of migrants: Horned and Eared Grebes, Western Grebes, Am. White Pelicans, Double-crested Cormorant, Turkey Vulture, Franklin's Gull, Say's Phoebe, all the swallows except for Cliff, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Common & Great-tailed Grackles.

Fun birding,
