[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Lake Banding Report, 10-21-21

Today was one of the more interesting days of this season.  We caught 23 new birds (first day we've been in the 20s since Sept 18!  Sigh.......).  

This included 21 new and 2 returns (a White-crowned Sparrow banded in 2019 and an Oregon Junco banded during a training session at the Nature Center feeders on 3/9/20).  

Our new birds included a FOS American Tree Sparrow, the first caught at the station since 2008.  We have not caught them in recent years because we have been closing earlier in October; one of several reasons for extending the season this year was to catch late fall migrants.  We also caught a stunning White-winged Junco, the first since 2016.

Here's the breakdown:

American Tree Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 7 new, 1 return
White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 4 new, 1 return
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 2
Dark-eyed Junco, White-winged 1

Only 2 days left in the season (we will take the station down at the end of banding on Saturday, 10/23).  Click here to register to visit - we are offering one-hour slots (up to 12 visitors at a time); 8:30-9:30 tomorrow, and 9-10 and 10-11 on Saturday.  Between new and recaps, there is usually something interesting to see, so come visit us in these final days!

[cobirds] Colorado Bird(er) elsewhere and a Red-naped Sapsucker (Boulder Co.)

Not wanting to run afoul (no pun intended) of our group rules, where can one go to seek info when birding, say for example,  in London in January?

A legit question in general, as many of us travel and knowing where to find the local equivalent of a COBIRDS group would be extremely helpful.

[cobirds] Report from a Colorado birding "annex"

For what it's worth in the way of informing Colorado birders, the first four individual birds I laid eyes on yesterday at the Wyoming Hereford Ranch on the eastern edge of Cheyenne were:

Golden-crowned Kinglet (f)
Fox Sparrow (slate-colored)
White-throated Sparrow (2 adult tan-striped)

All were in the buckthorn hedge near the unmarked "Office" at the north end of the long, cottonwood-lined drive entryway as one enters the property from Campstool Road.  This hedge is always worth careful scrutiny, as is the "yard" all the way around the building.

Away from the buildings, as has been true of most "wild" areas this fall, I saw very little else. The riparian area along flowing Crow Creek north of the farm buildings and residences was particularly devoid of life.  Where are the birds?

[cobirds] Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year update

All,
I'm so behind on blog posts and storytelling. It's not as if there have been a ton of great birds to chase in the last month and I've found little on my own, although the last week has been pretty awesome!  More posts coming real soon.

I've posted here about the Chestnut-collared Longspurs that I've found at Chatfield, and I found ANOTHER one today (this time in JeffCo, and my SIXTH in the west metro in 2 years). But here's a story about the birds I found a few weeks ago. Many folks got to enjoy these beauties over the subsequent week. That's what it's all about. Sharing and enjoying birds! These are stunners too. One of my favorites!

Here's just a fun story and the Joe Roller connection. It's weird how all this comes together sometimes. This is what makes this birding big year so special.

That Long-tailed Jaeger. THAT story. This is one for the record (aka crazy) books.

If you haven't pledged or donated, WHAT are you waiting for? Let's do this? We're on the verge of topping $30,000 for bird research in Colorado. And this is just from me walking and pedaling around Denver chasing birds! It's been a total blast!

Only 8 birds banded on this morning when we had another late start because of frost on the nets:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2
Hermit Thrush 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2
Song Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1
