The Colorado Rare Bird report is an informational service.
Because of statewide coronavirus "Stay at Home" orders, the purpose of this report is to keep homebound readers abreast of rare bird sightings across the state during spring migration.
It does NOT endorse or encourage illegal travel to see or "chase" rare birds beyond your own local area.
Once again, we must urge readers to respect state and local restrictions on non-critical travel and limits on outdoor activities that include birding.
Please bird ONLY at or close to home and ONLY with universally promoted safety precautions, including physical "social distancing" and face coverings.
Or, as Dave Leatherman noted this week, "Be like a Cedar Waxwing . . . very compliant in their wearing of masks."

Spring migration notes:
The past few days provided multiple Whimbrel sightings, continuing large flocks of Curlews and Godwits. Wednesday was a Louisiana Waterthrush in Larimer County (first County record). A few days prior we saw raptor migration is in full swing with kettles of Broad-winged Hawks and Turkey Vultures. Some Cassin's Finches are continuing to be reported around the State, but at much fewer numbers than the mass migration we saw with last week's snow.
Dribbling in are Broad-tailed, Black-chinned Calliope Hummingbirds (a FOS Calliope was reported in Fruita on April 22);
Phoebes, sparrows and longspurs continue to move through. Shorebirds (sandpipers, plovers, phalaropes, Dunlins, curlews, and godwit) peaks have passed, but some are still showing up at shores and flooded fields.
And did somebody say "warblers"? They are starting….

—On April 25 a Red-necked Grebe was reported at Cherry Creek State Park-Pelican Point to Swim Beach by Joey Negreann.
BENT COUNTY:
—On April 24 a Neotropic Cormorant was reported at John Martin Reservoir at Lake Hasty on March 31 (Multiple obs)
—On April 20 a Northern Parula was reported at John Martin Reservoir SWA by Duane Nelson.
CHAFFEE COUNTY:
—On April 24 a Black Rosy-Finch was reported among a mixed flock of rosy -finches in Salida by Sally Waterhouse.
DENVER COUNTY:
—On April 25 a Golden-crowned Sparrow was reported at Sand Creek - Havana St.- to Westerly Creek. First reported on April 19 by Jake Shorty. There are no previous eBird records for Denver County. Seen again on April 21.
DOUGLAS COUNTY:
—On April 25 a Black Phoebe was reported at the South Side of North Platte River at Waterton Road by Doug Kibbe and Mackenzie Goldthwait.
EL PASO COUNTY:
—On April 23 a Black Phoebe was reported at Mary Kyer & Stone Falls Parks by Terrence Berger.
—On April 23 a Glossy Ibis was reported at Clear Spring Ranch. First reported on April 18 by Tyler Stewart.
—On April 21 a Summer Tanager was reported in a NW Colorado Springs backyard. First reported on April 16 by Marty Wolf.
—On April 22 a Rusty Blackbird was reported at Fountain Creek Regional Park near mile marker 18. Firs reported April 21 by Lisa Edwards.
—On April 21 a Rusty Blackbird (male) was reported at Kettle Lakes, in the NE corner of the lower pond. First reported on April 17 by Kip Miller.
NOTE: Chico Basin Ranch is closed until at least Apr 30 because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
GRAND COUNTY:
—On April 23 four Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches were reported in Grand Lake at Shadow Mountain National Recreational Area by Bill Carleton.
—On April 20 a Glossy Ibis was reported at Shadow Mountain Lake by Eliza Prall.
JEFFERSON COUNTY:
—On April 24 a Yellow-throated Vireo was reported at Harriman Lake Park. First reported April 21 by Kevin DeBoer.
—On April 21 a Yellow-billed Loon was reported at Standley Lake and Park. First reported on April 18 by Will Anderson.
—On April 20 two Long-tailed Ducks were reported at South Platte Park/South Platte Reservoir —Southwest Bay Area. First reported March 11 by David Bailey.
NOTE: Red Rocks Park is closed indefinitely because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
LA PLATA COUNTY:
—On April 22 a Swamp Sparrow was reported at Zink's Pond, near the right end of the second island from left. First reported April 16 by James Beatty.
LARIMER COUNTY:
—On April 24 a LeCONTE'S SPARROW was heard in SE Ft. Collins at Topminnow Natural Area by Nick Komar. (NOTE, access to Topminnow Natural Area is RESTRICTED, and only permitted from the fence line along East Horsetooth Rd). Reported by Nick Komar. There is just one previous eBird record for Larimer County, from April 25, 1998.
—On April 23 a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was reported at Spring Creek Park, at the bridge and surrounding area. First reported April 22 by Jessie Reese and Matthew DeSaix. This is the FIRT Larimer County record for this species in Larimer County if accepted by the Colorado Birds Record Committee.
—On April 23 a Bewick's Wren was reported at Colorado State University Environmental Learning Center by Lori Zabel.
—On April 23 a Glaucous-winged Gull was reported at Horseshoe Reservoir. First reported on April 20 by Joshua Smith.
—On April 21 a Black Phoebe was reported at Colorado State University Environmental Learning Center. First reported April 20 by Robert Beauchamp.
—On April 20 a Tennessee Warbler was reported at Pineridge Natural Area/Dixon Reservoir. First reported April 19 by Jessie Reese.
—On April 20 a Long-tailed Duck was reported at Watson Lake. First reported April 18 by Josh Bruening.
LOGAN COUNTY:
—On April 23 a Glossy Ibis was reported in Iliff at 19220 Co Rd 55 by Glenn Walbek.
MONTEZUMA COUNTY:
—On April 25 a Pectoral Sandpiper was reported at Puett Reservoir State Wildlife Area by James Beatty.
—On April 20 a Pacific Loon was reported at McPhee Reservoir - west end by Glenn Dunmire. There are no previous eBird records for Montezuma County.
OURAY COUNTY:
—On April 24 two Clark's Grebes were reported at Ridgeway SP — Bay View Day Use Area. First reported Feb 21 by Don Marsh.
—On April 21 a Gray Flycatcher was reported at Ridgeway SP-Visitor Center & Campground By Don Marsh.
PROWERS COUNTY:
—On April 23 a Hooded Warbler was reported at the Lamar County College woods by Jill White Smith.
PUEBLO COUNTY:
—On April 24 a Yellow-throated Warbler was reported at Roselawn Cemetery by Brandon Percival.
—On April 22 a Yellow-throated Vireo was reported at Pueblo City Park singing above the Frisbee Golf Course creek area, on the west side of the park. First reported April 21 by Brandon Percival

SAN MIGUEL COUNTY:
—On April 24 a White tailed Ptarmigan was reported at Bridal Veil Falls Road-old mine to the falls by Eric Hynes.

PLEASE NOTE: Because of COVID-19 pandemic precautions, Denver Field Ornithologists has suspended all field trips scheduled for April, May and June. Other birding clubs have also canceled activities, and the annual Colorado Field Ornithologists convention, set for Pueblo in May, has been canceled.
