[cobirds] Huerfano County Update: BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO Persists!

The Black-billed Cuckoo was seen and heard today in the same spot and very close to the same time as it was yesterday afternoon.

Lynne Miller and I had heard it a couple of times earlier in the day. We headed out to Cty Rd 358 at a little before 4:00 as there was a Yellow-breasted Chat calling so loudly in the yard it was drowning out virtually all other calls. We met up with Maggie Boswell and Joyce Takamime near Wahatoya Creek. As the cuckoo has persistently only given one of the 4 calls on my program, I played the call, just once, to them so we would all be listening for the same thing. The cuckoo responded and was eventually seen by all of us! It flew across the road into our yard where a short time later it called once and refused to call again! We knew it was there but could not find it.

We had to leave a little after 6 this evening. I do not know if the birders who arrived shortly before we left were successful.

Thank you Lynne Miller for an immensely enjoyable day, a very nice lunch, wonderful conversation and for being so patient and stalwart as we waited for that skulker to show itself!
