Folks,

Below is an update regarding the possible tree removal operation at the Twin Lakes birding hotspot. Thanks to Maeve Conran at KGNU, Elena Klaver, Susan Winter, and several local birders who did some sleuthing into the issue. Looks like some continued discussions will be needed with the agencies in charge, but for now the cutting has been delayed until public meetings are held.

Hi everyone

I've spoken with Ryan in the Division of Dam Safety at the State Engineers office who confirmed that due to public outcry over the tree removal, no more trees will be removed until a public meeting is held (that is yet to be scheduled and may not happen until late this year or early next year). I also confirmed this with John the President of the Boulder and Left Hand Ditch Company. The Division of Dam Safety also said that they had required that smaller newer growth trees be cleared out, and that no directive to remove any of the larger trees had been given at this time. 

I think it would be interesting to talk to someone about the importance of that area to migrating birds...and also how all these different interests play out together (State engineer's office who say they need to mandate this type of thing for safety purposes, ditch company - who's responsibility it is to get irrigation water to their customers - local residents who enjoy the trees - Boulder parks and open space who want to keep area for rec.).
