[cobirds] Female downy woodpecker nesting behavior

I have had a female downy woodpecker roosting in one of my chickadee boxes since October. This box was previously used by house wren last year and their stick nest remained. This week I was contemplating removing the old nest and adding woodchips to the bottom of the box to encourage the downy to nest. Well, today I opened the box and to my surprise all of the wren sticks were taken out and a nice compact downy nest was built. She had chiseled out a section of the back of the box to create saw dust and also added a few feathers. So cool! OK, so here's the weird part, there has not been a male downy present all winter and no sign of one currently. This past week this female has been drumming in a tall willow tree, sometimes for more than an hour and a half! This is new to me, I always assumed it was the male who attracted the female by drumming and not the other way around.

Let me know if you seen this behavior before, or if you have any comments.
