[cobirds] Bent and Prowers Counties, 4/23/13

Birders,

Persistent snow fell for much of the day in SE Colorado, but for the
most part melted as soon as it fell. As a result, a number of migrant
birds made landfall. Normally, I stick to reporting things that I think
might force people to consider a trip to SE Colorado, but I'll
(slightly) break form today.

VAN'S GROVE
-Orange-crowned Warbler (1)

JOHN MARTIN RESERVOIR
-Great Egret (1) west end
-12 species of shorebirds, including 6 Piping Plovers, 1 Snowy Plover, 1
Semipalmated Plover, 1 Whimbrel (much earlier than normal), a surge of
Western Sandpipers, and a few of the other early "peeps". Those
interested in seeing Piping Plovers need to contact me off-line, as
these endangered birds are protected by closures around their nesting sites.
-Peregrine Falcon (1 adult)
-Neotropic Cormorant (one adult in breeding plumage) with about 300
Double-cresteds on the second point west of the dam on the south side of
the lake. These cormorants are skittish. If you get too close, or get
out of your vehicle, they will scatter.
-Lesser Black-backed Gull (1) West end. There are probably about 8
species of gulls on the lake right now.

LAMAR COMMUNITY COLLEGE WOODS
-Broad-winged Hawk (1 immature dark morph)
-Common Yellowthroat (1)
-House Wren (1)
-Lincoln's Sparrow (1)
