Black Canyon Audubon Society
Banding Assistant Training Course
Ridgway, CO (4/22-5/16)
The Black Canyon Audubon Society will be offering a free Banding Assistant training course at Ridgway State Park in Ridgway, Colorado this spring. The course will cover all of the core skills necessary for helping operate a bird banding station, and it will be especially useful for those who wish to volunteer during the BCAS fall migration banding session, which is held at the same spot. It will also help those who in the future want to become certified banders or banding assistants under the North American Banding Council, as it will be structured around NABC guidelines. The course will be taught by Amber Carver, who is an NABC-certified Trainer who has banded over 1500 birds.
This is not a "crash course" in banding. It is intended as a primer for those who would like to know more about how banding stations work. Amber will be operating the station between April 22nd and May 16th, and she will be accepting trainees on a restricted basis. For a detailed banding calendar, contact her at the email listed below.
To accommodate varying schedules, this course is being made available to both short- and long-term commitments. Those who are only available for a few days during the training period will be provided with valuable training in data recording and net checking. Those who are available for a longer period may learn how to safely handle a bird using approved grips, how to release birds properly, and how to extract birds from nets. Trainees will learn about the process of banding birds and gathering data, but hands-on practice of these skills will not be part of the course.
At the end of the course, you will be provided with a "report card" that summarizes the skills you successfully mastered. If you decide to volunteer at a banding station in the future, you can present your report card to the Bander-in-Charge as proof of your experience. Amber will keep in touch will all trainees to make them aware of opportunities to receive further training or to undergo the NABC certification process.
To apply for this training course, please send a brief letter detailing your experience with birds (if any), your professional background, and your availability. No experience is necessary, and all are encouraged to apply, but preference will be given to those who demonstrate a genuine interest in becoming bird banders or banding assistants in the future. To apply, or to request more information, contact Amber at caramb22@gmail.com. There is no fee to attend this course, but donations to support the BCAS fall banding operation are always welcome.
