Rare, out-of-place and out-of-season species include:

 

White-winged Dove (*Ouray)

Great Egret (Jackson)

Bell's Vireo (Prowers)

Black-throated Sparrow (*Otero)

Hepatic Tanager (*Otero)

PAINTED BUNTING (*Jeffco, Otero)

[Set of northern US prairie species (Larimer)]

    

[Southbound migrating warblers which breed outside CO are beginning to show up already, particularly in the northwest corner of the state (Nashville, Townsend's).]

JACKSON COUNTY:

---On July 24 Brad Steger reported a Great Egret at 18 Island Reservoir off US34 about midway between Walden and Muddy Pass/Rabbit Ears Pass.

JEFFERSON COUNTY:

---On the morning of July 23 a cooperative male Painted Bunting was found by Claire H. at the Chatfield State Park Audubon Center feeders.  It continues to appear off and on thru July 28, making it perhaps the most-viewed individual of its species ever in Colorado.  If the feeders are down in early morning or in the evening, be sure to check for the bird in trees, shrubs and on the ground in vicinity of feeder poles. On July 28 one specific area where it occurred was the area west of the southernmost of the two buildings, including the bench where mixed seed that included millet, apparently its favorite, had been placed.  Thank you for updates posted to COBIRDS, including those about its feeding habits.

LARIMER:

---Of late, Andy Bankert and Matthew Webb of the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies report Sprague's Pipit (singing, confirmed), Eastern Meadowlark and multiple Baird's Sparrows from the non-public areas within Meadow Springs Ranch north of Fort Collins.  At Soapstone Prairie Natural Area northwest of Hamilton Reservoir multiple Baird's Sparrows have been present for months, with some of them breeding.  The great majority of the Soapstone Baird's Sparrows are in areas off-limits to the public but lengthy hikes from the main parking lot into public areas to the east may produce this species.  The non-public area birds at both Soapstone and Meadow Springs Ranch cannot be pursued by birders because of their locations but Andy wishes to let birders know of them because of the possibility other individuals might be detected nearby (for example, prairie areas east and west of I-25 from Wellington north to the WY line).

 OTERO COUNTY:

---On July 23 a male Painted Bunting and adult Black-throated Sparrow were reported as "continuing" along Higbee Valley Road (Otero Road 804) by Kevin Keirn. No details on the locations of these birds were provided but presumably these were along the Higbee Valley Road from the cemetery continuing southwest to the end of the road a couple miles hence.  Also seen along this road, famous for its Zone-tailed Hawk(s) last summer, were Summer Tanager, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Mississippi Kites and Ash-throated Flycatcher.  The turnoff from SR109 onto Higbee Valley Road is about 12 miles south of LaJunta.

---On the morning of July 27 a yellow (f or imm) Hepatic Tanager was photographed in a cone-laden juniper in Picketwire Canyon (37°39'18.5"N 103°34'04.2"W) south of LaJunta by Steve Mlodinow.  Also seen or heard in this area were Black-throated Sparrow, Summer Tanager and White-throated Swift. 

OURAY COUNTY:

---On July 27 an adult White-winged Dove was reported from Dennis Weaver Park (yes, THAT Dennis Weaver) in the town of Ouray by David and Susan Disher.

PROWERS COUNTY:

---On July 23 a Bell's Vireo was reported as "continuing" at Granada SWA by Tony Leukering.  This sighting, about 4 miles east of the town of Granada, was ne of the curve in  28 Road where it changes from e-w to n-s.
