Sharp-eyed John Breitsch spotted a Common Redpoll on our DFO field trip in Denver City Park on Sunday morning. Female or first year bird was with mixed flock of House Finch, House Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco and Black-capped Chickadee at the retention pond along 17th Avenue, SE of Ferril Lake. Birds were in junipers and willow bushes along southeast shore of pond, going to and from the water's edge. Believed to be a new bird for the park.
Also notable: a dark Snow Goose grazing with a large mixed flock of Cackling and Canada geese on lawns southwest of Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
Although mild weather and lack of ice equals fewer ducks than normal, Duck Lake has Common Goldeneye, American Wigeon, a single Bufflehead female and several small rafts of Northern Shovelers. Also seen in park trees: 5 Brown Creepers, 5 White-breasted Nuthatches, 3 Townsend's Solitaires, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets.
