Not wanting to be the only Colorado birders who have not seen a Dickcissel this summer, Bayard and I followed up this morning on Kathy Mihm Dunning’s post and went to CR X between CR 50 and 52 and were rewarded by two fields (on the south side of CR X) full of Dickcissels. Bayard and I saw 6 different individuals, all singing adult males, and counted about 11 more by voice, for a total of 17 birds, presumably all males. We did not locate a female or immature. Took some adequate photos which are posted to ebird, one of which has the very hazy San Juan Mountains in the background, unfortunately not the beautiful Sangres! In my agricultural/botanical ignorance, I am unable as yet to identify the plants with beautiful purple and white flowers which appeared to be focus of the Dickcissels’ attention.
Thanks to Kathy for the posting and also giving Saguache County some well-deserved ornithological publicity. For those birders who weren’t aware of Saguache County, or only post from Russell Lakes on your way to somewhere else, come on down and spend some time!
