A population of several dozen Baird's Sparrows appears to be attempting to nest in the grasslands of Soapstone Prairie Natural Area and nearby areas in northeast Larimer County and northwest Weld County. Nesting has not yet been confirmed but CFO members can assist in the effort to document what may be a significant population shift. Observers/photographers are needed to capture images of Baird's Sparrows carrying food items to nests or carrying fecal sacs away from nests or feeding young. To this end, a small group will be co-led by Nick Komar and Brenda Linfield on a guided 8-mile round trip hike of easy to moderate difficulty, from 8 am to 2 pm this Saturday, July 23. To register (free of charge) and arrange for carpooling, reply to this email privately to Nick. The trip is limited to 13 participants (due to Natural Area regulations) but we may get permission to expand the group size or add additional groups. Registration is first-come, first-serve.
