[cobirds] Birdsong Expert Don Kroodsma Talk

Cobirders,

Birdsong is a passion for Don Kroodsma. Ripley's "Believe It or Not" reported Don's remarkable finding that a Brown Thrasher learned and re-sung over 2,000 different songs. Don has studied how birds acquire their vocabulary, what the different songs of a single bird mean, and how evolution has resulted in amazing variations. Ninety million years ago, simply stated, songbirds, who learn their songs and often have great variety, diverged from birds who have their songs hard-wired into their DNA. But Don wonders why Brazilian Sedge Wrens can precisely imitate a rival's song, but North American Sedge Wrens can't imitate at all.

Don is the author of The Singing Life of Birds, a fascinating investigation into the varieties of birdsong, Birdsong for the Seasons, with stories from a year of listening to birds and trying to understand what a bird has on its mind when it sings different songs. Don's ample recordings on the accompanying CDs illustrate his findings.

Thursday, May 26, Don Kroodsma will be sharing stories from his new book Listening to a Continent Sing, from his ten week bicycle ride from the Atlantic to the Pacific. His presentation will be at 7:00 p.m. at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and sponsored by the Museum and Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. Go to DMNS.org, Learn, Adult, After Hours to purchase tickets.

I guarantee you'll be fascinated by what you learn.
