Hello, Birders.
-- The City of Denver--and I mean right smack dab in the middle of Denver--is excellent for birding in mid-winter. You can see Merlins and Prairie Falcons, you have a great shot at beautiful waterfowl and a surprisingly large flock of Common Grackles, and there's always the possibility of a rarity: a warbler or rare duck or something. Oh, and you're practically guaranteed sightings of Humboldt Penguins and Abyssinian Ground Hornbills. You can see all that and more in Denver's City Park, and that's we'll be birding on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015.
You don't have to drag yourself out of bed super-early for this one. We'll assemble for this CFO outing at 9:00 a.m. on the west side of the main lake (technically, it's Ferril Lake) in the park, and we'll bird the park for an hour or so. Then we'll enter the grounds of the Denver Zoo, with its bewitching mix of wild and captive fowl--plus various creatures that really can't be put in either category. After a break for lunch (on your own) we'll reconvene at the Denver Public Library's Eugene Field Branch Library for an interactive lecture, discussion, and workshop. Join us for some or all of these activities.
No need to RSVP for any of this, but you're welcome to contact me by email (tedfloyd57 "at" hotmail "dot" com) with any questions. This outing, sponsored by Colorado Field Ornithologists, is free and open to the public. Note that there is a fee to enter the grounds of the Denver Zoo, so please bring your zoo membership card or adequate funds to enter the facility. Parking is free, but give yourself a bit of extra time to navigate the byzantine system of roadways within the park; or take the bus. Bring you binoculars, if you have them, and dress for the weather. Beginners, young people, and general curiosity-seekers are especially welcome.
