[cobirds] Boulder County varia, Jan. 18-20

Hello, Birders.

A few odds and ends from around Boulder County:

Sunday morning, Jan. 18, at Valmont Reservoir, Peter Burke and I saw 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a distant large falcon that I think was a Peregrine Falcon; the bird didn't come close enough for us to see any plumage details. Sunday afternoon, Jan. 18, at Walden Ponds, Hannah and Andrew and I saw a close-up large falcon that was definitely a Prairie Falcon. Otherwise, we saw pretty much the same stuff reported earlier by the Boulder Audubon group.

Yesterday, Monday, Jan. 19, Bushtits were singing at Greenlee Preserve. Spring has sprung!

Today, Tues., Jan. 20, I saw a White-throated Sparrow near St. Paul's United Methodist Church. The bird is in exactly the same spot where David Gillilan, Catherine Labio, Christy Owens, and I saw one of the 12/14/2014 Boulder CBC; plus, it looks the same. No doubt the same bird, overwintering. The bird was in a tree at 39.9814609 North, 105.2435303 West. Look for the Dark-eyed Juncos and Spotted Towhee (just as when we saw the sparrow in December) and say, "pish, pish, pish, pish, pish," and the bird will come out. A Bushtit was singing nearby; the ongoing population explosion of Bushtits in the northern Front Range metro region continues to amaze me. There was a flyover flock of Red Crossbills here, too. Over at Valmont Reservoir, the long-staying Tundra Swan was present.
