[cobirds] RFI - List of USA/ABA endemics

Happy New Year!

I have not been able to find an authoritative list of the endemic species of birds in the USA or ABA.

If someone could point me in that direction, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Let's Go Birding!!!

[cobirds] open water on Erie Reservoir, Boulder County

Erie Reservoir, on the east side of 287 just north of the Safeway, has a patch of open water.  There were a lot of canvasbacks swimming in it, along with ring necked ducks, lots of white cheeked geese of different flavors, and a number of gulls.  As we were looking straight into the sunlight, it looked like one probable herring gull, and a lot of ring billed gulls, but it would be worth going there in the afternoon when the light is favorable.  We didn't stay long enough to count, but it was a nice way to end a morning wintering raptor survey.  The pheasants seen at the beginning of the survey at about 9:30 am (on the northwest corner of 119th Street and Arapahoe Road) were not there when we finished about 11.

[cobirds] Carolina Wren (Jefferson County)

A beautiful Carolina Wren has been visiting a yard in Lakewood for over a month now. The homeowners (avid birders themselves) have agreed that they would like birders to have a chance to see this bird in their yard at 2695 Newland St. The bird is erratic, but today was seen for over an hour in the afternoon.

You may park on Newland, and come in the yard. There is a feeder behind the house on the west and a suet feeder on the south side of the house. Today the bird seemed especially interested in the peanut butter suet. Please be respectful of the bird and don't approach too closely.

Happy New Year!

[cobirds] John Martin Reservoir, 12/31/15

Birders,

The deep freeze has frozen all local lakes, but John Martin Reservoir (Bent County) remains mostly open, due to the large volume of water still present following historic floods last spring. I posted following the John Martin Christmas Count that birds were shockingly sparse on the reservoir on December 15th. Cold weather to the north and regionally has finally brought an influx of migrant and wintering birds. The reservoir is teeming with birds, and I'd recommend making it a birding destination before it freezes. I did not visit every part of the reservoir today, or go through every bird, but here's some of what I encountered:

American White Pelican - at least 22 individuals. We missed them on the CBC.
Pacific Loon (1). Still present, can be anywhere on the lake, and very hard to locate. It seems to favor the lake west of the state park boundary (look for the signs at a cattle guard).
Grebes - lots of Pied-billeds, a few Eared, and at least two Western.
Gulls - have arrived en masse. I had one adult Lesser Black-backed and one adult Thayer's from the campground loop north and east of "Point Overlook" among hordes of other gulls. I am sure more species are present. There is an ice shelf in the bay just east of the campground, and some of the gulls roost close to shore on the ice.
Lots of ducks of many species. Finally, the Common Mergansers made it this far south.

A pair of Ladder-backed Woodpeckers is wintering along the river below the dam. I would recommend looking in tall, burned salt cedar (tamarisk) trees, especially near "Mrs. Robert's Pond", which is close to the southwest corner of Lake Hasty.

[cobirds] Fremont, Pueblo Co. birding, 30 Dec 15

All,
Longish post, but fun day out birding, so I thought I'd share some stories (nothing super rare here).  Yesterday I decided to explore some new places in CO, look for some state birds and a couple potential lifers around Canon City and Pueblo, mostly.  Nothing like waiting until it's the dead of winter to go look for my first Colorado N Saw-whet Owl pre-dawn.  Closer to Sedalia, my dash temp gauge said it was -1.  I was seriously questioning my sanity at this point, but that ship sailed many years ago. I made 4 stops on Hwy 67 up towards Rampart Range Rd in Douglas Co and whistled up a N Saw-whet Owl at my last stop at dawn.  It was a balmy 9 degrees. I had a Great Horned Owl at another stop, so owls at 2 of 4 stops in bitter cold is pretty good in my book. Nice start.

I went to look for the Acorn Woodpecker in CO Springs (El Paso Co), but missed it.  However, it was pretty neat to see Stellar's, Western Scrub, and Blue Jay in the same tree together.

I zipped down to Brush Hollow SWA in Fremont Co.  No roadrunners, but I finally got a LONG overdue lifer Northern Shrike (yeah, I'm am easterner who just couldn't find one, it was almost a nemesis bird!) and after some hiking around through the junipers and kicking up tons of juncos, a flock of Bushtits, a Canyon Wren and a half dozen Townsend's Solitaires, a couple Juniper Titmice made themselves apparent (second lifer of the hour!).

I drove up Phantom Canyon Rd for a couple miles and had hordes of House Finches (snooze) and Pine Siskins (always fun to see and hear), and while looking at a couple Western Bluebirds in the bunch, a Bewick's Wren started fussing at me and posed for photos.  The Bewick's was my first for CO and one of my targets for the day.  I didn't even have to try for it.  An immature Sharp-shinned Hawk flushed everything. A suspect Chihuahuan Raven was seen and heard (at a distance), but I left it as Raven sp. Neat area!

On to the Tunnel Dr area, just west of Canon City.  After a little hiking, I found one highly cooperative Rufous-crowned Sparrow, a couple Canyon Towhees (I still like these guys a lot), and Canyon and Rock Wren.  Amazingly, the Rock Wren was the only one that I got a good look at in CO this year. We have a rocky relationship and they've always been tough for me for some reason, although I have photos of one on a street sign that said "Rocks Ahead" from near the Paton's Place in SE AZ earlier this year.

I wasted some time looking for birds I had little chance of finding at around Canon City but saw about 100 Am Wigeon munching on grass in a city park, much like Canada Geese.  I then rolled east to the S Shore Marina at Pueblo Res (now in Pueblo Co.).  I quickly refound the adult Great Black-backed Gull and a couple adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls. I had at least one Canyon Towhee among the scrubby trees and concrete blocks immediately south of the tires where the gulls gather.  I didn't expect that, but I apparently don't know much about Canyon Towhees. I didn't spend too much time at the marina, mostly trying to stay on schedule. More time scoping every gull would have been better. It was nice to see a bunch of places I've read about, even if I didn't have hours to explore each one.  Next time!

I lastly made a quick drive through the Sunset neighborhood, just south of Pueblo City Park, looking for White-winged Doves, as suggested by Brandon Percival (thanks for the all advice and tips Brandon!).  The only bird that I saw in 5 min of driving around that wasn't a Canada Goose was one White-winged Dove.  I saw one within 30 sec of getting into the neighborhood.  Talk about some good luck! I've seen White-winged Doves in many states, but this was a CO bird for me and practically on the route home, so that was nice.  And I got home a little early, keeping my wife happy.  I forgot about the Trumpeter Swans near our place in Littleton, or I'd have stopped to look for them as well. There will be more opportunities to explore.

It was a great day in the field to mostly end 2015. I got almost all the target birds for the day (that I realistically had a chance at and time to look for) plus a bunch of state birds and a couple lifers to boot!  I saw some great new places and landscapes and learned quite a bit about some birds.  Can't wait to get down there again and spend more time stomping around!

Some photos from yesterday start in a gallery here:

Great birding!

[cobirds] Reminder "The Messenger" songbird documentary

From Boulder County Audubon:

The Messenger Documentary is an important new documentary that explores mass songbird depletion in the US and paints a lyrical and beautifully-photographed portrait of those who are fighting against it.

We are so happy that this film will screen at Dairy Arts Center Dec. 30 through Jan. 2. Boulder County Audubon Society will have a table with lots of great info during one of these screenings, and Stephen Jones will lead a discussion after the film on Dec. 30. Watch The Messenger trailer, and buy your tickets now!

Thanks, and happy holidays!!

Re: [cobirds] South Platte Reservoir--Arapahoe/Jeffco

I stopped in by chance at South Platte Reservoir at the very tail end of the day at the tail end of errands and saw the 2 Trumpeter Swans, but missed the Long-tailed Ducks. They may still have been there, but the light was failing and I was cold! Among a growing group of gulls assembling at the reservoir there were 1 adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and 1 first cycle Thayer's Gull. Two Bald Eagles passed over, and a third was perched in the distance.

[cobirds] Crook CBC

Hi All,
The Crook CBC posted it's second highest species total with 78 count day birds. There was heavy snow cover and some very deep drifts which made for some interesting sightings. Many birds were driven into wind blown fields or along roads. We found four species new to the count:  Sharp-tailed Grouse, Brown Thrasher, Lincoln's Sparrow (3) and Red Crossbill. We also had 85 Bobwhite and 125 Turkeys probably a result of the snow cover. Other notables were Swamp Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Mourning Dove and Brown-headed Cowbird. To echo Bill Kaempfer's comments on Western Meadowlark we had 509! I suspect this was also a result of snow cover. Interesting to note we had no Black-capped Chickadees. They just have not recovered from the West Nile infections of several years ago. Thanks to all who participated and make this a fun count to do.
