[cobirds] Rusty Blackbirds, Manitou Lake, Teller County

Jeff Jones and I saw a pair of Rusty Blackbirds 300 yards north of the dam at Manitou Lake. Drive 7 miles north of Woodland Park on CO Route 67.  See National Forest sign for Manitou Lake on the East side of highway. Park, pay fee ($6.00) at NFS Station.  Walk the west side stream trail to the north and see the RUBLs working the willows on both the east and west side of the N-S stream. They hunker near the ground, but perch high in the willows and display regularly. There is an interpretive sign on the west side of the stream at N39 05.573N, W105 05.809W.  Sign says "Colorado's Tassle-eared Squirrel  We saw the birds working 100 meters north or south of that sign on both the east and west sides. Listen for a call that may make you think of Killdeer.  That is combined with some of the classic gurgling ... sounds to me almost chicken-like low "clucking."
