Bill Maynard and I decided to meet up at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in eastern El Paso/eastern Pueblo Counties, (http://www.chicobasinranch.com/) at 8am this morning, and birded until 1pm. We found 50 bird species.
El Paso County side of the Ranch (around the banding station mostly):
Harris's Sparrow - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
Western Bluebird - 1 male
Mountain Chickadee - 1 seen and photographed (this is the more regular chickadee at this location, Black-capped Chickadees are accidental at Chico Basin Ranch).
Downy Woodpecker - 1
Curve-billed Thrasher - 1 singing
Pueblo County side of the Ranch (Headquarters, Rose Pond, Upper Twin Pond):
Cinnamon Teal - 5
Say's Phoebe - 1
Virginia Rail - 1
Horned Grebe - 1
White-breasted Nuthatch - 1 (rocky mountain race)
Marsh Wren - 1
13 species of waterfowl
Killdeer - a lot of them in the flooded alfalfa field, south of Rose Pond
Mountain Bluebirds were moving around in good numbers in both counties, and the usual for Chico Basin Ranch, Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were in both counties as well. Still pretty early for most things, we looked in areas for Burrowing Owls, Mountain Plovers, and Sage Thrashers, and didn't find any today.
Good birding,
Brandon Percival
