[cobirds] Laporte and Grandview Cemetery (Larimer) 7March

In Laporte (Larimer) today were the following highlights:

residential neighborhood north of Laporte Pizza
*Merlin (either 'taiga' or 'Pacific' subspecies) - darkish merlin seen (not well) diving thru the neighborhood trees in pursuit of a bird brunch
*Evening Grosbeak (at least 25) - feasting on Siberian elm buds, boxelder seeds, silver maple flower buds, Douglas-fir seeds from cones, ponderosa pine seeds from cones, and at a feeder with sunflower/corn bits (owner of the feeder said she had "about 200" in her yard one morning in mid-Feb!)
*Steller's Jay (1) - they seem to be everywhere at low elevation this winter e of the foothills

*Eastern Screech-Owl (1 gray) in boxelder on private property along Overland Trail just south of Bingham Hill Road (i.e., about a mile south of Laporte)

Grandview Cemetery (Fort Collins at w terminus of Mountain Ave., Larimer) highlights:

*Brown Thrasher continues in the backyard at 143 Frey just across alley from chicken coop one block e and one block n of cemetery entrance (present since 12Dec2013) - please respect the fact this is a private yard and neighborhood
*Great Horned Owl female on nest in traditional elm in Section H (female first seen in nest crotch on 24Feb)
*Pine Siskins present in good numbers, paired, and acting as if they will nest (after being absent most of winter)
*Cooper's Hawk doing courtship flight overhead (probably will nest in neighborhood e of cemetery)
*Mountain Chickadee (1) - this species suspected of pairing with Black-caps at Grandview in the past

*Also, Broad-tailed Hummingbird nest in the southeast corner, which has been utilized the previous 4 summers, appears to be in tact enough for a 5th refurbishing.  If this happens, it will apparently establish a new record for consecutive # of years use of same nest by this species.
