[cobirds] Seeking Citizen Scientists!

Hi all!

Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is seeking volunteers for its Bald Eagle Watch citizen science program.

Volunteers are needed to collect data on Bald Eagle nesting behavior from February to July at nests located along the Front Range of Colorado, from the Denver area north to Fort Collins.

A training session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 18 at RMBO's Environmental Learning Center, 14500 Lark Bunting Lane in Brighton, Colo., at the north entrance to Barr Lake State Park.

Started in 1988, Bald Eagle Watch has expanded from one nest at Barr Lake to more than 20 nests with the help of dedicated volunteers. These citizen scientists gather important data that help wildlife managers and conservation organizations ensure healthy populations of Bald Eagles, a once-endangered species. Being a Bald Eagle Watch volunteer is an excellent way to observe Bald Eagles up-close, learn about their nesting behavior and network with eagle enthusiasts. There's a scientist in all of us and as citizen scientists, Bald Eagle Watchers help gather valuable data to inform the management and conservation of this iconic species.

No previous experience is necessary to take part in Bald Eagle Watch. Volunteers must be able to monitor their designated nest(s) weekly for a minimum of one hour; fill out a data sheet and enter data into an online reporting system; drive to the nest site(s); and own a pair of binoculars or spotting scope.

If interested, individuals are asked to RSVP for the training session by Jan. 16 with Birek at 970-482-1707 ext. 25 or jeff.birek AT rmbo.org.

Founded in 1988, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is a Colorado-based nonprofit that works to conserve birds and their habitats in the Rocky Mountains, Great Plains and Mexico through science, education and stewardship.

Happy Birding!
