Yesterday I walked the S Platte River trail from 100th to 88th. Within a half mile of starting, I saw a male Barrow's Goldeneye, just before you reach the "bridge." However, this bird seemed to be missing the horizontal white patches on the wing shown in the field guide. Is there much variation with this species? A link to pictures is below. (On the walk back, this goldeneye had flown into the lake on the left, if walking toward 100th). Soon after, there was a Mallard X Gadwall hybrid feeding with mallards and pintails. At the green and white water tower, the other male Barrow's Goldeneye was feeding with about 20 other goldeneye. At the trailhead at 100th, there has been a dark morph red-tailed hawk hanging out that is pretty neat. Also, there was a shoveler that caught my eye because it had a ton more blue and green in its wings than the others. Is this typical as well? Pictures of all of the birds are in my photo stream at http://www.flickr.com/photos/113273083@N07/ . Also in the photo stream are some pictures of some hybrid geese that I have been attempting to identify. If anyone is able to take a look, or if you have any good resources on how to identify them, I would greatly appreciate it!
