My wife and I had a great trip north this morning where we were able to add two lifers to our lists. The first was the Brandt at Houts Lake (Larimer County east of Loveland) amongst the racers running the perimeter at about 9:15. The second was the Little Gull at Terry Lake (north of Longmont in Boulder County) at about 10:45.
Upon our arrival at Houts Lake, we were able to witness the Brandt flying (yes flying) southward toward the parking area where it politely landed in the water not far off shore affording us great views and photographs looking toward the northeast. Several others were present to witness it swimming around the area and even preening on the floating pump platform.
From Houts Lake we traveled south to Terry Lake. We arrived on the east side about 10:15 where we met Chuck Hundertmark and Alex (did not get his last name) who informed us that we had missed the bird by only a few minutes as it had left flying in a northwesterly direction. We attempted to relocate the bird on the west side but there are few locations to pull off and check the lake from there. On our return to the east side at about 10:45, we were greeted by several birders who delightedly noted that the bird was again present. We were able to get numerous looks from those present with shared scopes before the bird flew northwesterly again after about 10-15 minutes.
A delightful morning.
